Sorry to see that, such a nice truck. The problem is a unibody construction, no frame, to make it cheaper. The damage in the photo not an issue for a truck on the frame, but with unibody, it must be totaled.

Trucks with full frames also have these crumple zones and are just as easily written off. Sure it is possible to cut the damaged frame parts out with a full frame but insurance companies often don't bother - especially when diminished value issues arise.

I've been rear-ended 3X so far, one of them when I was on a motorcycle. I sometimes use "LO" gear in heavy traffic for 1-foot driving but I try to avoid its full deceleration because the brake lights remain off. I suspect that some day, NHTSA will mandate brake light activation during regenerative braking above some threshold.

How did you come out insurance wise? Are you going to be able to replace it with no money out of pocket?

If you can live with the way it looks you can keep it and insurance will give you a payout and a low by back on it .Looking at it im sure you can buy it back for $5000 or less plus the insurance money for the remainder of the payout. I have been there and bought back from insurance company, just something to consider Good luck with whatever you decide .

🤔The following is from another Maverick forum. Concerning rear end crashes and bent boron high strength lite weight steel.

We have the exact same thing in our body shop right now, a scuff on the rear bumper but both unibody frame rails are bent, problem is its made of HSS ( high strength steel) and
Ford wont allow repair or sectioning so its replace only.
We just got the part and its half the truck. We are finding many labor times are not included and am betting that it will now total. There are going to be thousands of totaled Mavericks from minor accidents moving forward. Probably by design.
The assembly picture is a weld on structure that first the old one needs to but cut from the car and the process basically will destroy the bed floor and the rear seat pan after rear suspension, gas tank, interior and all removed.
Simply not worth it, also worth mentioning is the 20k + Carfax that will render it unsellable after completed.

Absolutely correct.
Especially if Ford Motor Credit financed and still owns the truck.

Glad yo
In late August, I was rear-ended while sitting at a stoplight. I wasn't hurt, but the crumple zones did their jobs and sacrificed themselves. I got notified that it was totaled last week. 8900 miles. Once the insurance wrangling is done, it's off to Dovi Motors in Cortland, NY to order a '25. I only wish that Cyber Orange was still available!

Glad Your Okay, sure doesn't look totaled from the photo, I'd drive it like that, take the insurance money and keep the truck.

Did the steel plate with the "teeth" (on the undercarriage) puncture the spare tire like it's supposed to when rear-ended with sufficient force (to absorb some of the shock?)

For Me, the point of spending the money buying a NEW TRUCK. Is so I don't have to drive around in an beat up unsafe truck. If the point was to save money.
I could have bought a wreck the first time around.
Just sayin.

I didn't check the tire pressure to see, but the spare did get pushed forward about as far as it would go.

I was tempted, but after looking at it carefully, I think enough things are bent that I wouldn't really trust it in the future. Check the gap between the bed and the door.
