I agree. Which digit of the Vin denotes the trim level?
Positions 5-7. Ford just breaks out between FWD & AWD

Has that change made a difference in the amount of tax ya'll pay?
Yes, we now pay less tax overall. The one-time TAVT replaced the one time sales tax & yearly ad valorem tax.

There is - by running that VIN through a database. ;)

🚗🦊 knows, so there is always a way to look it up. Especially if you're the government looking to collect those juicy tax dollars.
Position 5-7 in the VIN is used for model information. Ford just broke out FWD & AWD and for MY23 the Tremor W8E, W8F & W8G

When I received the Indiana title for my Maverick, I noticed it was listed as a Maverick XL instead of an XLT. Today I went to the license branch to check on this and get it changed so that, in the future, when the truck is sold, there won't be a question about the model.

I did get it fixed but the odd thing was that the clerk checked the VIN and it came back as a XL. She ended up going to the parking lot to check the VIN on the dash and the model designation on the fender. The window sticker also shows XLT.

I don't know what database they check for these things but this is not right. You might want to check the state paperwork on your Maverick to see if the correct model is listed.

Please report back to us if you have any discrepancy like I did.
I was born and raised in Indiana, enough said.

Yeah I am just giving you a heads up that in most places "property tax" means real estate tax, and the internet had people from all over. But most folks would also know that "personal property tax" is not real estate.

The experience this time around was much different than in the past. I bought a '98 Ranger, '99 Explorer Sport, '03 Focus, '08 F150 all new. I special ordered my '15 F150 SuperCrew with a long bed. I traded in the '15 with multiple issues, the most expensive being a transmission replacement. Various other less expensive issues included the window wiper motor, eco boost replacement, rotors calipers pads all the way around , blank radio, ect... 200,000 miles on it and I loved that truck every mile it took me. It was towed to the dealer and the repair bill was in the $15K range so I talked toy wife and together we decided new with a warranty + the 100,000 extended was the way to go. The dealer charged me a $5K inflation fee and with tax, tag, title and the warranty the total was $49K OMG my payment is the same as my F150 so I'm not hurting financially but it's still aggravating. I had to make a snap decision about the purchase because people were literally lines up to buy cars that day behind me when the doors opened. The dealer had my broken truck, I had no transportation, and they just happened to unload the in a beauty the night before when I dropped my f150 off for service afterhours. I do love the Maverick and feel lucky to have found it but I feel like I severely overpaid. On the other hand the Rangers we're in the $70K range and the F150s were in the $90K so I kinda feel good about it. Fully loaded with that warranty makes me feel fancy😂

I sent an e-mail to the Indiana BMV about the issue and here is their reply today:

Thank you for contacting us. We would be happy to assist you today.

When entering vehicle information for a title transaction, the BMV enters the VIN into the NMVTIS. This information is entered by the vehicle manufacturer at the time the vehicle is made. The BMV will use the information the vehicle manufacturer has provided in to the system unless an error is found. Such as verifying the vehicle is marked as a XLT instead of a XL. Upon verification, the BMV can correct the make and model of a vehicle according to the markings provided on the vehicle.

If you have any further questions, please let us know

So, it looks like this happens from time to time and they fix it at the local branch level.

FYI, Indiana charges an "Excise Tax" on vehicles when we renew our registration and license plate each year. And no, they didn't adjust what I had already paid for my registration since they updated the model to a more expensive one. At least not yet.
