Only the “refreshed” 25/26 Maverick 2.0L EB and the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel engines have aluminum valve covers.

All other current Ford engines have plastic? Coyote, Raptor, 3.5 EB, etc etc.

Not sure why…

Edit…I’m guessing the 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel has metal covers because it is a beast. But why the refreshed 2.0 EB?

He doesn't say what vehicle he's referring to.

From Twit-X today:

As a veteran automotive technician, I think it’s an outrage and so wrong that a 50K truck would have a plastic engine oil pan and drain plug! And also plastic transmission pan, valve covers, intake manifold and so on. About 50 percent of many of today’s vehicles are plastic.

Everybody starts clutching their pearls when auto OEMs use plastic in the engine pay, but modern polymers are so good that it makes a lot of sense to. They're lighter, won't corrode over time, don't transmit heat (great for intake manifolds), can have NVH benefits, and can reduce costs significantly.

Why does the refreshed 2L have aluminum VCs? Don't know. Maybe they needed some part of it to be more structural than plastic could provide, or maybe they expect it to be subjected to more heat than plastic would tolerate.

To the last posts comment on why.

Maybe half the head is plastic now, and the VC needed for structure.

I replaced the plastic filter cap assembly with an aluminum one on my 2017 Tacoma because I thought the aluminum one was stronger and more heat resistant. I did this when I first purchased it. It took 100 ft/lbs of torque to loosen it (dealer grease monkey should have been shot. Left them a bad review that has been read 30,000 times, no joke). The plastic cap removal tangs were undamaged on removal. It was as strong as the aluminum replacement. Turns out I wasted time and money doing the changeover. I hope all these plastic parts are as strong as a would-be metal counterparts but I doubt it.

The old V8 aluminum valve covers with fins would warp, creating an oil leak. You could tweak the bolts once lightly to stop the leak. 10,000 to 20,000 miles down the road, it was time to replace the cork gaskets. An easy customer-pay job back then, not so easy now.

Neighbor had the plastic oil pan replaced 6 times on his EB F150. He's not a fan

My guess is the valve covers were changed to better fit with the redesigned Oil Separator. The previous design had the Oil Separator molded into the plastic cover…

Anyway, here is what AI says….

Quote:
“The cast aluminum valve cover replaced the prior plastic one in the 2025 redesign. Ford did not publicly release a detailed engineering rationale for the material change specifically, but it aligns with the overall engine overhaul. Likely contributing factors include:
* Improved durability and heat management — Plastic/composite valve covers on EcoBoost engines (especially turbocharged ones) are prone to warping, cracking, or degrading over time due to heat cycles, vibration, and thermal stress from the turbo and high operating temperatures. Aluminum dissipates heat better and resists warping, potentially leading to longer seal life and fewer oil leaks.
* Integration with the new aluminum block/head — Using aluminum for the valve cover creates more consistent thermal expansion/contraction across the upper engine, which can help maintain gasket integrity and reduce stress on mounting points.
* Modern design trends — Many newer engines favor aluminum for perceived premium feel, better long-term reliability in performance-oriented applications, and easier integration of components (e.g., PCV systems, coil mounts). The change also gives the engine bay a cleaner, more metallic appearance, as noted by owners.
This refreshed 2.0L appears to be the first standard-production version of this specific 2.0L family to ship with aluminum valve covers from the factory (earlier 2.0L EcoBoosts in the Focus, Escape, Fusion, Edge, etc., used plastic/composite). The update rolled out around the same time in related vehicles like the Bronco and Maverick.
Context Across Other EcoBoost Engines
Most other EcoBoost engines (e.g., 1.5L/1.6L, 2.3L, 2.7L, 3.5L V6) have historically used plastic or composite valve covers from the factory. These are lighter and cheaper to produce, with integrated features like PCV valves or oil separators molded in. However, they have well-documented issues:
* Warping/cracking from heat (especially on turbo V6s like the 3.5L in F-150/Expedition).
* Leaks around spark plug/coil areas or VCT solenoids.
* Stripped coil bolt threads over time.
This has led to a thriving aftermarket for aluminum replacements on 3.5L, 2.3L, and earlier 2.0L EcoBoosts, which owners often prefer for better longevity.58 Ford has not broadly switched the entire EcoBoost lineup to aluminum valve covers— the 2025 2.0L change seems tied to its specific redesign rather than a fleet-wide policy.
In short, the “only” aspect likely stems from the 2025 2.0L being the standout recent factory example with aluminum on this engine family, driven by a comprehensive update prioritizing durability alongside the new aluminum architecture.”

And then GM engineering came out with valve cover reinforcements that distributed the load along the valve cover lip. This solution was not that much help.

The reinforcement went under the VC bolts in an attempt to distribute the load. VCs still leaked in short order. So Ford wants to recreate an old problem. BTW, plastic turns brittle with age and exposure to heat. Tap it with a hammer and it will crack. Warping leaking plastic oil pans? Predictable, no surprise there. Thin pliable sheet metal is still a reliable option. New super-duper plastic? Designer's guess, hopefully educated. Love being a guinea pig!

The aluminum valve covers on the refresh are pretty - but you have to remove the OEM air box to see them:)

I like functional and adequate over pretty. Engineers, gotta find a way to show them off!
