A Weird Question

I am a big girl. 300lbs (trying to lose but that's beside the point) and I just have to know - what's the weight max for climbing into the bed (the pressure on the tailgate)? Please don't try to attack my size, I don't like it either. It happened before I realized it, but while I am working on it I just want to know if I can stand up there - or climb on it - without denting/bending it. Thanks....

I have read on this forum that it is 500 lbs. for down position and 400 for the in between position.
Might check the manual. Good luck with your weight loss if that is what you want. Hey, we can't all be perfect! In fact, NO ONE is!!!!

Edit: Manual says 500 lbs for middle position; I cannot locate a weight spec for the down position.

Me and my wife are your size. We sit on it together and tailgate all the time. I also stepped up and down on mine about a dozen times the other day putting racks on my topper.

This is dynamic, while driving. So really more like 800lbs.

I'm a skinny little guy at 160 lbs and it made a metal crack/pop sound when I hopped on.
Since then I try not to stand at the edge of it.

Standing on the rear bumper on the other hand is no problem.

Well the other curveball here is that some (many?) of our tailgate cables are not the same length, so you have more (all) weight on just one when the tailgate is down with no weight on it. That is until the shorter cable stretches to the length of the other longer cable.....

Yeah, I haven't seen anyone complain in a bit. But it is still a thing. My 23 was manufactured in May and my left cable is definitely longer than the right cable. I just don't care. Haha. If I put weight on it, it evens out so that both are taut.

You're welcome. Honestly I have never sat on a tailgate that didn't squeak or creak. It's just what they do. If they don't it was probably built for non truck people that really should be driving a Mercedes, especially since they paid $90k for their powered, dampend, lighted, folding escalator, bluetoothed, with a built-in mini bar tailgate. Ford did what it needed to do, make it strong enough for me and my lady, design it to make the bed space more useful, and put a coke bottle opener on it!

I weigh 310 dressed and literally stepped one footed on the lip of it several times saturday while I was measuring fabrication and fitting my topper cross bars.

good thought there, i would imagine that no 2 cables would be the precise exact length. but.... i have a hard time believing Ford's cable length tolerances for the tailgate cables are so loose as to cause issues with the the tailgate being severely out of level or failing to hold at least the 'test weight' design spec, engineers almost always 'over spec' this kind of stuff beyond what they are willing to officially certify it for in my experience working for Ford.

you may have heard of a concept called C.Y.A. (cover YOUR ass) right? if they need a 400b capable cable most engineers will design one that exceeds that minimum for damn sure.
no, im not an engineer but this is how theses things work.

to the OP my advice would be to not worry about the tailgate holding up unless there's some obvious sign of sagging or unusual noises when putting her weight on it. if that happens have a dealer or someone who knows what their doing check it out. her current weight & more should be no problem for the tailgate support system as long as there are no weird cable length issues or a loose/failing cable connector either on the bed or the tailgate.
