I did what a lot of you were wondering if it could be done: Replaced the factory Ford battery in my 2022 Maverick Lariat Hybrid with a larger, AGM Battery. I decided to do this after taking to dealer too many times and them telling me nothing is wrong, and yet, I have been carrying around an extra battery in my bed to jump my vehicle when it randomly would do the deep-sleep nonsense and refuse to start.
Here was my problem: After I bought a less than $15 volt detector, the last straw was 11.4 volts. Time to replace the battery. By-the-way, I DID NOT have to modify the molding under the bench – some forums state that modification was necessary, but for THIS EverStart H5 AGM, no modification of the molding was necessary!
I went to Walmart and purchased the EverStart H5 AGM battery for $188=tax:
Once I got home and had cooperative weather, I lifted the rear bench:
And removed the battery cover:
Next I remove the molding nearest the door:
Then removed the molding piece that surrounds the battery:
And with a 10mm socket, I removed the Negative cable, then removed the RED positive terminal cover, and then the positive cable.
Then I removed the bolt with the plate that secures the battery from moving around:
Next, I wiggled the battery to make room to remove the vent (do not damage it – you will need to reuse it), removed the battery which reveals the metal tabs that hugs the factory battery in place:
I then took a piece of wood to try to hammer (16oz) the tabs flat:
But it was slow going, so I used a metal socket extension I had in the garage:
Along with trying to directly hammer the tabs flat, mission was finally accomplished:
I put the battery in place and carefully reattached the vent plug:
Make sure you do not pinch the vent hose and also make sure that the vent hose is BELOW the bolt sticking out:
Reattach the positive cable along with its RED cover (the one that came with your Maverick) then the negative cable and then reattach the securing bracket so the battery is unable to move:
Reattached the molding in the reverse order that you detached in:
Lastly, I initiated the BCM to recognize the new battery, set ignition to ACC (in other words DO NOT START ENGINE). With in 10 seconds complete the following:
1. Flash the high beams 5 times
2. Hit the brakes 3 times
3. A red Battery light should flash 3 times
4. Turn off
5. Start engine
6. Turn off
7. Next I just locked up and let sit overnight.
These next to photos are just me flexing:
