Lincoln doesn't want you to know it's one of those 5th dimensional superpositional driveshafts. Tippy top secret. Lets it run right through the battery pack that'd prohibit an ordinary material driveshaft.

Now I get it. Adding the drive shaft and rear diff was cheaper and easier. Suited to the maverick & escape. Also sets things up nicely for placement into the Bronco Sport.

Plus I think the larger battery pack blocked a driveshaft. Which would also explain the Escape PHEV being FWD-only.

I think that tried to make the AWD as close to the EB as possible. Maybe some of the Tremor stuff will find its way into the hybrid? That spot for a 2nd battery open still? Electric torque and AWD make for some great low speed off-roading options.

I'd love to see a hybrid Tremor, or at least an FX4 package. I suppose they could use the other half of the under seat bin for another battery pack but they have to run cooling to it too.

No. There is no Corsair FHEV, PHEV is there the closest analogy. And I’m not the one who brought it up in this thread. Here, people are discussing whether Maverick AWD is mechanical or eAWD.
Which is is. The Lincoln seems to be an odd-one out, most other Fords use mechanical AWD systems. It's possible the Lincoln was done that way because the PHEV system didn't leave enough froom for a front-to-rear driveshaft.

They already have a spot for one without taking any usable space away. I am curious to see if the AWD used this space.

Just because that powertrain cutaway doesn't show anything there doesn't mean there isn't. That's where the EVAP canister and tubes are located. And adding a complete second battery system is more trouble than it's worth; now you need to plumb it for cooling and integrate a daughter battery energy control module. Simpler to make the primary HVB bigger.

Thats what I was curious about. How ready did Ford make this spot for a 2nd battery? Looks like that might have been considered early in development but discarded farther along the process. Curious to see if they have something planned that frees this space up later.

There's really no reason to have engineered for a second battery; it doesn't "solve" anything to do so. More battery capacity wouldn't make the hybrid system more efficient to be worth the aforementioned engineering complexity it introduces. Unless you're talking a PHEV, but then you need a battery an order of magnitude larger.

I'm wondering what Ford did to the HF55 to make it able to tow 4000 lbs. I know the hybrid AWD now comes with more cooling, but the specs of the HF55 are identical to the HF45 as far as power output goes (or maybe they derated it for the Maverick AWD) and I'm wondering if the rest of the internals are the same. Would be interesting to know.

I have to admit I feel a little FOMO having the FWD hybrid now.
Curious, what makes you think Ford needed to do something to the HF55 to tow 4K?

I certainly could've written that better. What I'm wondering is what are the structural differences between the HF45 and HF55. I know the HF55 would have an output for the driveshaft but beyond that, the power output looks to be the same.

So, are the internals beefed up or is it just an HF45 with an output shaft? That is what I'm getting at. Just curious really. I know there is someone here who regularly tows a FWD with >2000 lbs and he's had good success doing so. I admit I probably won't ever do so, but would like to know what went into the design change besides AWD (if any).
