Hi all,

I bought a 2024 Mav EcoBoost in August of this year.
AWD + FX4.

Been loving the car so far. Great utility and MPG however it does seem to have some quirks that I am not sure if they are normal.

1) During my first drive in the am, I am on a slow road going 15-20 mph before getting to the main road.
During this section the car becomes very jerky while just holding throttle steady. Is this normal? It feels almost like its misfiring/ stumbling. No codes, or CEL.

2) Usually again, mostly on first drives of day (though not exclusively), as I turn right, accelerate up and the trans shifts from 2-3 or perhaps 3-4 I hear a knocking noise, like a thump- as if someone bumped into the car from behind. This is not an engine noise, its either trans, or a diff. Anyone have this?

I dont trust my local dealer to be able to notice this issue, so I am either hoping its normal or it gets worse.

Hi there! Would you send us a private message with your VIN and dealership name and location? I’d like to look into this concern on my end.

I don't think either of those are quirks. My car has never stuttered and I have never known a clunk in a transmission to be a normal thing. Mine is the hybrid so the transmission is different, but I would be worried about a noise when the car shifts.

If you are only using 87 octane, try using 91 (if available) or 93. The engine lugging you have described many others encounter. It goes away with 91 or 93.

I'm only aware of the hybrid being a bit jerky at its first stop, so I'm thinking these are not normal for you EB. The truck is new and still under warranty. I'd take it in.

There are other threads about these issues, mine does surging bucky feeling on a cold transmission and engine as well. Usually happens after it shifts to 3rd or 4th gears.

MY23 AWD FX4 here. Not normal. Assuming it is under warranty, try to find a dealer you can trust, but I imagine that could be very hard to replicate. Good luck.

My transmission behaves the same way when the truck is cold. It shuffles around and is annoying. Once warm it seems to go away. It is actually hard to say if it's the trans or the engine. Only ever used 93 octane and the truck on has 3200 miles since May.

I bought a 24 in mid July, and it did that jerky engine/trans bump thing twice before Aug 1. I assumed it was normal break-in jitters. It hasn't happened since. IDK

If you still have thumping noises, take it to dealer. We had a weird rattle, they put some wireless microphones under there and drove it around.

Turns out front right strut was defective. Replaced for free, they even picked it up and dropped it off at home.

I have the same thing on my 2024, FX4. For the first mile it stutters and stumbles, kind of like trying to get a teenager out of bed. Afer that, smooth, no further stumbles. Do not have the noise.

My '24 FX4 doesn't behave like that, regardless of octane.
Yours doesn’t ā€˜Lug’ a little in normal mode at 15 hundred rpm’s or so around 30-40 mph deciding to not downshift so the truck feels and sounds ā€˜not normal’?

Nope. But, if it did, a slight dip of throttle is all it would take for a downshift to bring the RPMs up to ~2000. I've never driven a vehicle with a perfect automatic transmission. They all require a little coaxing here and there to keep RPMs where you want them. Eventually a little throttle control becomes second nature. Mine is eager to keep RPMs closer to 2000 under slight load rather than lugging at 1500.
