Is the Atkinson 2.5 liter engine used exclusively in the Maverick Hybrid or is it also used in other Ford vehicles? I know the 2.0 Ecoboost engine cover from other Fords can be transplanted to the Maverick 2.0 but I don't know about the 2.5.

Its been around for a while, used in various Ford products such as the hybrid versions of the Fusion, Lincoln MKZ, and Escape.

I owned a 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid and it had the Atkinson 2,5 liter. I can't tell young it has been updated or not but it worked great for me. It still used in the current Escape with even better mileage that the 2009 Escape.

The same Atkinson 2.5 engine is currently shipping in the Escape hybrid and PHEV models.

There are also strong suggestions it will become available in the 2023 or 2024 Bronco Sport, and the upcoming North American Transit Connect replacement (all are C2 platform vehicles).

Isn’t the engine based off the Mazda L5 engine. Thought I read that somewhere.

I have since learned it's also in the Mazda Tribute so yes, you are correct. Thanks

So the 2.5L in the Maverick hybrid is the same one I have my Escape? Geez it's been around awhile (since 2008 I think) and yeah it's a Mazda design. Some people have gotten 300k miles out of them. Supossed to be one of Fords most reliable engines. I change my oil every 5k miles.

They are supposed to be very reliable indeed. 200,000 miles is common, over 300,000 is not that surprising if you do regular maintenance. Hopefully as good as my 2001 Ranger with a 3.0 V6 that was at 398,000 when an idiot employee fell asleep driving ( middle of the day) and hit a horse trailer and Suburban. Sure wanted to see how many miles I could get out of that great Ford truck :)

No, your 2018 Escape has a different non-hybrid 2.5L engine.

As others said, the Atkinson engine in the Maverick is pretty old, and has been marketed alternatively as a Duratec or Mazda L in the past. I'm not sure why they just call it 'Atkinson' in Maverick documentation. Presumably its to make it sound newer than it is? Seems to only cause confusion, as most people seem to think its an untested accident waiting to happen rather than a tested platform.

Because it's an Atkinson Cycle engine (as opposed to a standard Otto Cycle) which describes an engine in which the compression ratio is different from the expansion ratio to extract more combustion energy. On modern engines that's typically achieved by using variable valve timing to increase intake valve opening time into the compression stroke so less volume is actually compressed.
