2.0 engine blew up. Now what

on the way home after 30 minutes into my drive it started missing and running on 3 cylinders. I pulled over and let it sit. Checked the codes and it another out babies it back home and 10 minutes away it would barely run over 60 in eco mode babying it

that's when you made a mistake and destroyed the engine, or at least that cylinder. you didn't say when it first set a code. when that happened you pull over, tow it, and maybe the engine is already gone or maybe you can save it. I'm saying this more for everyone else's benefit and yours next time. do not reset a misfire code and keep driving. do not replace a melted or otherwise damaged plug and keep driving.

spark plugs at this power level are never the issue in my experience unless you have the heat range wrong which causes detonation.

possible other causes:
bad fuel. not enough fuel, especially if running high ethanol on a standard 93 e10 map.

dirty or failed injector.

aggressive map with too much timing and/or lean afr.

.. and a lot of other possible causes you have to tear down to check out.

Absolutely not. I'd be more worried about 85 octane.

That's good to hear. It's probably best to pick an octane and stick with it for the timing to adapt. I run 87 but if I see 85, I pick the grade closest to 87.

If it didn’t destroy the cylinder wall or head it would totally rip some of the blades off the turbine wheel.

It sometimes seems "ok" to keep driving, but I've learned that unusual vehicle noises are always cheaper to fix if you stop immediately.

When I say it had a miss to begin with. It was a miss that was so slight and barely notice I could barely feel. But no codes or anything. During this. I just kept it on eco mode for the 100 mile drive and it was gone.. it didn't return till 10 miles away from home and that's when the light came on. And I kept babying it. At 1 am I doubt I could have got it towed in my area. I'm putting a note scope down it this weekend. It does have compression. I removed the plug and it's definitely working. But still a slight missing. Thinking maybe the hook Got jammed in a valve. Cheapest case scenario as it feels. Maybe a $600 head from ford. Worst case a $2200 Corsair engine.

It didn't have any aggressive tune or crazy heat range spark plug like some of y'all mentioned. Plugs was the original ones at 56k or 58k miles. Run 91 octane in the gas tank and 87 octane tune.

yeah, things can just break. I didn't realize you're under 60k miles.

I would try to get this covered under factory powertrain warranty, but unless your dealership is already aware of your mods they probably will immediately blame them instead of troubleshooting, even if it was caused by something like a bad injector (which would be totally unrelated).

@Dueces got warranty coverage on his transmission but that's not the same as trying on the engine. still maybe he has some tips on how to start a discussion with your dealership.

So where did you obtain the 87 octane Tune from? Did they also supply the upgraded intercooler you have?

So, I just read the whole thread, and am still confused. Is the motor toast or is it running? If compression is good across all cylinders, you don't have anything stuck in a valve, because you wouldn't have good compression on that cylinder.

The dealership should not void warranty for an intercooler. It doesn't change the tune, nor does it hurt the engine in any way, it only allows the engine to run as intended for longer. They didn't even look twice at my intercooler, or downpipe for that matter when my trans failed.

I would take it to the dealership, and explain what happened to the spark plug, and have them look into it. Especially if you are under 60k miles!

OP hasn't stated what the mileage on the truck is, for some reason.

If you are under 60,000 miles you have a powertrain warranty that should cover it. If you are a little over then you can have the dealer contact Ford to get a one time repair under a warranty.

Yeah, I'm still confused how a misfire in 1 cylinder means the engine blew up.

Turns out that a lot of "totaled" cars/trucks of all makes are being auctioned off and going to Georgia (country), quickly repaired with no pesky safety requirements and resold around their neighboring countries. A large portion going to eastern European countries.

The Maverick would make a good Technical.
