I just purchased my 2024 Maverick XL Hybrid about two months ago and my MPG has dropped from 40.9 MPG to 31.7 MPG. I live in Palm Springs CA and Living in the desert with temperatures in the 100s necessitates AC most of the time. Should it cause a 25% drop in fuel economy? Anyone else have any experience with this issue?

Are you reading your mpg correctly? Just asking because your situation sounds really strange. Warm weather usually gets you better mpg. And you should be at least at 43mpg.

My three month old xl hybrid has been getting about 36 mpg. Using AC about 50% of the time in mostly city driving, and driving with a light foot. I try to use econ mode but usually forget.

My Hybrid hasn't been below 40mpg. Drove to San Diego (from Orange County) with the air on at 70 mph and got 40mpg. Not sure what is going on with your rides.

Living in Louisiana though we've not had a super hot summer as of yet. I think the highs have been just about 90 to 93 degree mark. But I have found that on either end of the spectrum. Super Hot or Cold the battery is impacted and therefore your MPG will be. During the spring and fall when temps are 60's 70's is when I get the best MPG. Usually average over 40 MPG. Right now I am averaging around 38 mpg, with a combination of city and highway. I also don't baby it when I drive.

Same situation for me. I purchased an XLT Hybrid 2 months ago and got ~45 mpg on the first tank and am now getting ~31 mpg on the second tank. Only difference is that it's 100F+ every day instead of in the 80's.

Interestingly enough, as I'm typing this I noted this post in the "Similar Threads" section at the bottom of the page: https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/forum/threads/mpg-dropped-by-10.36463/

It seems like we're not alone and that the excessive temps affect the hybrid battery.

I dont trust the mpg computer to begin with. Gret reference but that's all. You have to fill up, zero trip, and devide miles by number of gallons on next fill up. I know everyone knows this but this is the most accurate way to measure mpg. I commute almost 40 miles one way every day. Mostly highway speed. The rest stop and go.
(In Austin Tx). I get 36 to 37 mpg.
I've had my XL hybrid since May 21.

I have a 2022 HYB XLT -live in CENTRAL FLORIDA (high 90's for last 3 weeks)drove from Orlando to JACKSONVILLE with AC on at 65-70 MPH and got 47,drove BACK at 80-90 with AC on and got 43 MPG.I do not trust the onboard calculator but find it is usually within 1-2 MPG of my calculations(and I do check every fillup). on a side note-all of a sudden there are 4 MAVERICKS in the one block around my house

Not so much is should it cause 10 MPG drop but could it cause 10 MPG drop. Yes, possible depending on other factors. That would be a lot for an ice but hybrid adds different parameters to consider.

Yep. Now that temps are close to 100 everyday I have been getting low 30s most trips that involve highway and trips that are short due to the motor running so much for the AC. I can still get 40 to 45 oh my commute but if traffic is worse than normal it drops due to sitting still for longer and running the battery down. I wish the Maverick had a larger hybrid battery.

A bigger battery isn't a free lunch. That power is still coming from the engine running at some point.

I know but I can gain a bit with regenerative braking and seem to max out the charge before I am done braking sometimes. My other hybrid also seems to stay on battery power longer while stopped than the Maverick.

I have EcoBoost and I haven't driven on the highway wtih this gas tank... Temps have been 104-109 all week... My wife is starting the Mav with the Pass App to cool it down... Seeing our lowest, 27mpg... I guess that's not bad for all city/town driving with full AC and lots of cool down cycles...

Very strange. I tried using gas from a different gas station other than racetrack, I use Shell gas. I don’t know this for sure, but it seems like my mileage has improved.

I am pretty much MPG obsessed and do what-ever I can to maximize the fuel/distance ratio. The absolute largest impact on fuel economy is "speed relative to the wind" (10-20 mpg difference), second is running the AC (about a 2-4 mpg difference while driving and more if stop/go), third seems to be ambient temperature on either extreme (below 40 degrees or above 95 degrees) due to trying to keep the batteries cool or hot, and finally summer-blend vs winter-blend fuel (2-3 mpg?). Altitude also has some impact but if you are driving in the same area then that is not relevant.

My highest MPG after 10k miles is around 48.5 mpg and this was all hilly, back-country driving (mostly at 35mph) taking my kids to school with no AC. Lowest tank was 33mpg driving 65-70mph with the AC on and mostly driving into a 10 mph head/side-wind (400 mile trip from Lubbock to Austin). At 55 mph (no wind) I can generally get about 42mpg but once I get over 60mph the mpg drops like a rock. At 75 mph the onbard gauge generally shows mid to high 20s on the flat with real MPG being around 28-30 MPG factoring in battery and coasting (use Trip 1 for my fill-up info and then Trip 2 if I want to just see the MPG for a smaller segment with constant speed). I can't even imagine getting some of the claimed MPG on this thread unless I had a huge tail-wind or was dropping in altitude.

I have tracked every single fill-up since I owned the truck (I track distance, fuel, truck stated MPG, actual calculated MPG, amount of AC use, and city vs highway amount). I typically target filling up between 400 and 500 miles. I easily get 8-10 MPG difference between fill-ups depending on what type of driving I was predominately doing. As such, without additional info, I am not at all surprised you see a 10 MPG difference. 31.7 MPG at higher highway driving speeds with the AC on sound about correct. If you have a lot of stop/go with AC on, that also sounds about right.
