Anyone out there with some insight into the chances Ford will come out with either a fully electric Maverick or a plug in Hybrid in the foreseeable future?? I’m llooking forward to the day I don’t have to stop at the gas pump any longer.

It’s all about profitability. Is there a market and can they make margins?
I would think the plug-in would be a better investment for Ford at this time. The compact EV may take a while since Ford took their absolutely best vehicle and ended up pulling the plug.

As mentioned, their new cheap EV is supposedly something between the Maverick and Ranger in terms of size.

The current Maverick platform won't support an EV setup and their plugin hybrid sold horribly on the Escape, which was on the same platform, so I highly doubt they launch a PHEV.

There's basically one coming next year -- Ford's midsize pickup (Ranchero) EV:

This appears to be the sister site for it -- https://www.rancheroforum.com/

Looks great! I think I’ll buy one.
That is very quick to market. What happened to teasing with a prototype to see if anyone cares?
At least people can see the Slate and make a deposit based on a leap of faith.
Does anyone have a rendering they can post?

OP, industry rumours and leaks suggest you'll have a few no-gas Maverick options in the next few years...

  • AutoForecastSolutions says a new Maverick circa 2028. New platform, but most of us would guess it stays a hybrid and ICE. But who knows? Maybe something crazy like the Nissan Rogue series hybrid (gas engine generating electricity for a BEV drivetrain)?
  • There's also the Slate, though it's smaller than Maverick and two doors (and kind of looks like a punishment box).
  • Rivian has strongly hinted at the R2T circa 2027 (more expensive for sure).
  • And it's hard to believe that some other OEM won't offer a small EV trucklet soon. I just can't imagine the major OEMs letting Ford have this market segment uncontested.
  • And my favorite, just because of the counter-cultural element - the Telo. The truck that no American male at all insecure about his masculinity will ever purchase.

I guess you missed all the hype of ford what they say mid size truck EV coming in 2027 BUT end of 27 so really 28. . But what they released so far it looks more Mav size. So you will have it soon.

I sure would NEVER want a plug in on ANY vehicle. The added cost for a plug in will NEVER be made back over a standard hybrid. The math is NOT for it. BUT sure if you like one sure. BUT economically not a good move. Wont save you a dime more like cost you $$

As an aside - instead of a plug-in, and given how small the battery is in the Mav, I'd be curious to see how much you could top up from a rooftop integrated charge panel. I use the truck quite sparingly, about 60-80kms a week just city commuting. It's parked streetside with good sky access, so I wonder how much of an additional dent it might make in my mileage? Wouldn't expect effective cost recovery for a custom solution, but if developed as a factory option down the road...

Even if the panel was just enough to run basic AC or heat in the cabin without requiring the hybrid engine to start?

I would think the plug-in would be a better investment for Ford at this time. The compact EV may take a while since Ford took their absolutely best vehicle and ended up pulling the plug.
With the current tariff structure and restrictions on rare metals, manufacturing EV's and Hybrids of all sorts is not economically possible in the US. EV's and hybrids sell like crazy up here in Canada. at least here in BC.

I was in the UK last fall and there are a lot of EV's in Europe and there is an increasing market for them. Ford has a number of EV's in the EU market that do not come to this side of the pond. There is even a Plugin Ranger in the EU. That would be a very successful product here in Canada. So I think that a PU in the size range of the Maverick as an EV or Plugin would be successful here in Canada.

I used to think that Plugin Hybrids were the way to go, and for large vehicles that may still be the case. For smaller vehicles in the Maverick range I think Plugin Hybrids instead of being the best of both worlds are actually the worst. If your primary operating area is urban than you are dragging around the gas engine as dead weight most of the time, its primary use is for charging the battery when there is no charging infrastructure around. If you are on the highway or towing then you are dragging around a mostly useless battery. The battery is likely more useful in a highway, towing situation than the gas engine is around town. It gives instant torque and regenerative braking which are both very useful.

I think the Plugin Hybrid has mostly been promoted by Influencers and others that have no real experience or expertise in the area. As an engineering solution for light vehicles I think it has too many drawbacks to be anything but a transitional technology. On the other hand for heavy vehicles it has real promise.

See this company and what they are doing for the trucking industry. https://edisonmotors.ca/

China 🇨🇳 is the answer.

In 2025, Ford announced a $5 billion pivot away from large, expensive EVs toward a new Universal EV Platform, driven by a team led by former Tesla engineer Alan Clarke.

The new platform aims to produce vehicles priced between $30,000 and $40,000, starting with an upcoming electric midsize pickup.

Changan Ford Joint Venture: The joint venture handles a large portion of Ford's localized new energy passenger vehicles, allowing Ford to leverage Chinese engineering and supply chain management.

Ford just wrote off in their most recent quarterly report another $777M on top of the $Bs they have already written off from their foray into EVs. Ford stock has been dead money for literally 55 years now, and their missteps into EV tree hugging will insure that continues quarter after quarter for years to come. BTW, both their ICE and hybrid groups make money each quarter, but the pure EV products they have so far brought to market have killed their profits and shareholder stock prices.
