What do you consider severe service?
Ford suggests things like frequent short trips, excessive idling, towing/hauling heavy loads, and extreme weather as reasons to follow the severe service schedule.

I would like to get 200K miles of (relatively..) trouble-free service from my Mav, so I'm hedging my bets best I can. 🤠

I didn't know if you were doing something like Lyft, Uber, GrubHub, farm...etc. type service.

Nothing like that, but I do a considerable amount of heavy towing, and push my Mav pretty hard here in hill country, that's the main reason I follow the severe schedule. Plus, with a small displacement FI engine, I think it's good practice for a ROI down the road, like after 150K.

I do the same thing as he does, but I also change my windshield with 5K spark plugs due to prolonged sun exposure and reflectivity loss.
I don't do the windshield but do change the air in my tires every 5K miles so it doesn't get stale.

There are several factors that qualify for severe service according to Ford:
  • Towing/Hauling: Frequent towing, heavy loads, or using a car-top carrier.
  • Idling: Extended idling or low-speed driving for long distances (e.g., police, taxi, door-to-door delivery).
  • Short Trips: Frequent trips of less than 4 miles (6 km) in cold weather, preventing the engine from reaching full operating temperature.
  • Environment: Driving in dusty, muddy, or off-road conditions, or in extremely hot/cold weather.
I personally consider short-tripping and extended idling to be the worst of the offenders, especially in the Ecoboost, being a known fuel diluter of oil. One example is my wife and her short commute of 3 miles one way to work every day.

I'm guessing if that's the primary use of the vehicle that makes sense.

Ford Maverick Anyone changed their spark plugs on the turbo 2.0? 20260402_083158

Some should just admit they're seeking an excuse to just work on their Maverick.

I would consider daily service as primary. We use it for occasional highway travel as well, but I don't consider that the primary use. This is one reason why I try to stay out of the oil change threads as much as I can, because many people on this site seem to blindly give general answers and don't even consider usage. Fuel is not something that "burns out" of oil as many think. Those hydrocarbons aren't affected by normal oil operating temperatures.

Granted, some common sense needs to be applied when considering severe service factors and how those factors affect each maintenance item:

Spark plug service interval: affected by short trips, towing/hauling, extended idling, but maybe not as much dusty, dirty conditions
Air filter service: affected by dusty, dirty conditions exclusively
Oil change service: affected by all factors listed.

etc...

I try not to give a general answer or personal experience. I try to refer/post from the owners manual as much as practical.
