If you are in the market for this kind of truck you need to ask yourself the question:

Do I buy the Ford Maverick which is made in Mexico OR do I buy the Hyundai Santa Cruz which is made in Alabama, USA?

That may be where the vehicles are assembled, but the parts are made all over. For example, the Maverick hybrid transmission will be made in the US.

Nope. No need to ask myself that question.

The only question is which one fits what I am looking for the most out of the available products in the segment I am shopping.

The Maverick is the answer to my specific criteria.

Maybe you should ask yourself if you want the profits from a new truck sale to go to a US company or to a Korean company.

The Maverick looks like a truck, gets 40mpg and starts at 20k. The Santa Cruz looks like an suv with the back hacked off, will get (estimated) mid 20 mpg, and start in the mid $20k (estimated). Easy decision.

As a detroiter I remember the “Buy American” push that was supposed to save the jobs of american auto workers. At one point it was so fervent that you risked having your car keyed if you drove a foreign. People would put fliers in your windshield calling you a traitor. People would yell at you and give you the finger. And it was because of that push back against foreign made cars the U.S. auto companies rallied. They were able to bring jobs back to the U.S. that had been shipped overseas and they all avoided bankruptcy without any assistance from the federal government. Everything was great and we all lived happily ever after.

But that isn’t what happened.

The huge push to “Buy American” ended in more jobs being sent overseas, more plant closures, more layoffs and American auto workers being left out in the cold. The automakers teetered on the edge of bankruptcy before the fed stepped in and prevented them from failing at the expense of the American tax payer. That’s when I stopped giving a shit where or who makes a vehicle. These companies are going to do whatever is most profitable and if that meant making them on the moon, they would do it. If it meant replacing every single human employee with a robot, they would. Never let a company fool you by using nationalism as a marketing tool.

Art I hear you and I am talking about American jobs that already exist in Alabama versus
jobs held by Mexican nationals in the country of Mexico.

I am aware of the "profit" goes where issue. Maybe there is no real answer to this.

It will be interesting to see the Monroney (window) sticker on each of the vehicles to see how much domestic content is actually in each. Final assembly is only part of the equation.

Since it's based on the Tucson, here's one of their Monroney stickers.

You say you're aware Rocky but it doesn't sound like you understand. Ford employees 88,000 non-dealer employees in the United States. Hyundai employees 5200 non-dealer employees. Again where would you rather see the profits go here or overseas?

This can be reversed to some degree. Maybe I want the money to go to American workers working at that Korean companies plant in Alabama. Rather than the money going the executives at the American company who cut American jobs to outsource to Mexico.

So the real issue for me here is if Hyundai can make vehicles here hiring Americans, why can't Ford?

That being said I'm still getting a Maverick because it fits my needs/life better.

But, if I was looking to give my money to a company with the thought of what's better for America, I'd probably by the Hyundai. Sad state of affairs we've allowed ourselves to get into.

I’m sure Ford employs more auto workers in America than Hyundai. There are economic reasons to manufacturer out of the States; the Maverick probably wouldn’t be under $20k built here.
