Greetings,

While washing my truck on Sunday, I noticed a chip on my right front wheel - see attached photos. I think this happened when a heavy flatbed cart got away from me on a Lowe’s parking lot recently.

Curious as to any recommendations / suggestions to repair it? I don’t plan to spend a bunch of money to fix it, but I do want to prevent it from rusting out and creating a worse problem.

Thanks

There's no worry about rusting, as it's an aluminum alloy wheel. Fill it with multiple thin layers of touch up paint until it's level with the factory paint.

This exactly, I would cover the area around the chip with painters tape, and over the course of say the weekend keep adding layers of touch up paint to the affected area.

You will not find "touchup" paint for wheels. For whatever reason, manufacturers don't make it available. But any old glossy black should blend in pretty well and look better than the chip. Even something like Rustoleum would be fine.

I would not use tape, you are likely to end up with a hard line that will stand out.

What I would do is take the wheel off and lay it flat (so the paint it more likely to flow out). Clean the chip with alcohol really well. Then I would use a small brush and drop the paint you are using in the chip - basically just barely touch it so the paint flows from the brush into the chip. Try to avoid brushing it on, you are more likely to get too much on and where you don't want it to be. Do a little bit at a time and watch the paint flow so you know if/where to add more. It will basically self level to an extent. Try to fill the chip, don't overlap with existing paint. Don't worry about getting it perfect, mostly what you see is the absence of paint. Once the chip is covered it will be much less noticeable.

I think I saw somewhere that the factory XLT wheels are painted Carbonized Gray. Don’t know about the wheels on other trim levels.

The wheels are non-metallic, glossy-ish black. Similar to the trailer hitch coating. If it isn't powder coat, it sure has a resemblance to it at least...

A.Bursell has the right approach in post #6.

Pro gtr tech here - I would use black colored “gluboost”. Gravity will be against you, so use a toothpick or a whisp and apply slowly. Tape off around it but not too close, just incase you glue the tape to the wheel. If you don’t get it flush, you can use a razor blade to cut back the amount of gluboost. Watch some videos, unreal product, bonds to poly and acrylic with no white crystals like super glue. Cheers, let me know how you make out, I need to do one of mine lol

Thanks to everyone for their input. I'll decide later how and when to fix this, and will post an update at the appropriate time.
