FOB Battery Dead at 2.33 years?

The button battery is cheap and easily replaced. Open the flip key and pry the "Ford" side of the fob open with a flat head screwdriver.

So I was at the dealer a month back. just looking at some newer vehicles. Went to unlock door and would not unlock with key. (I have the old flip open regular key). Good, here I am at dealer, easy peezy? uh, no. The parts gal had a battery and put it in for me and while pressing the bejesus out of the cover, she broke a piece off! Said to come back next day as the "contractor" locksmith would make and program me a new key. So he did, the next day. Got down the road the next day, stopped at grocery store and now my lock/unlock range is about 2 feet! Have to stand right next to drivers window. My old key had a range of about 30 feet from truck. Any ideas? Still under warranty. I'm thinking I may not even have an antennae in my key fob. I put in another new battery, no help. Thanks in advance for any help!

Here is an inside tip for keys if the case is lost or broken…

Every dealer has a box of lost keys in sales dept. if your nice you can get a key just like yours and fix it. My daughter dropped her fob and broke it, then “lost” the buttons half. The remains were the chip circuit board and battery. 2016 escape.

I worked at a MB dealership previously so I knew this insider info.

I went to the dealer and buddied -up with a sales guy and then Colombo’d him if they had a box of old keys…well it worked. I was able to get 2 fobs in good shape.
I swapped parts and it worked.

Maybe you are accidentally pressing the buttons in your pocket a lot? I went through a battery every two years in my last vehicle, but it was a smart key, not a dumb key like the XL and XLT.

Mine only lasted about a year. But I do use a lot for the remote start (lock-unlock-lock) for the remote start.
The worst fob battery was on the CRV, less than 6 months, but that was a 1610 or 1616 battery, less than a quarter the size of a 2032 battery.

You can get a six pack a remote batteries for $5.99 on Amazon. Pretty cheap I wouldn't sweat it.

Demand a new truck

Put it on a trickle charger overnight then check state of charge. If that doesn't work out then repeatedly take it back to the dealer until they replace it with an AGM button cell.

The Altima my wife had with their proximity key needed replacement every 12-15 months. Her Subaru, also a smart-proximity key, goes 2-3 years depending on the battery freshness and how frequently she uses the Crosstrek. - They drain faster in or near the vehicle.
