Is the old rollover/blowout issue still looming over firestone tires? An issue caused by Ford recomending low tire pressure.

Everything about them seems great. At least top 5 tractions in all categories among AT's. Light weight for the ones that care about unsprung mass.

Theres the one youtube guy on here that has them mounted on his hybrid but that seems about it.

Finding comparison videos on youtube is difficult but the few that do rate them reallly high.

Available in 2 ply and 3 ply in our sizes I believe.

Pretty good warranty mileage.

3 peak rated

I am very likely to buy them after my stock pirelli scorpions. My other two choices are wildpeak and toyo.

Just looking for info and anything I may have missed.

If you haven't seen it Tire rack has a little video review on them on there site. Looks like a aggressive tread.

Don't have experience with these, but have been very happy with my Toyos. They tend to be quite light.

The treadwear rating of 540 is a little "meh". They have an A traction rating but only a B in temp rating which may or may not be a big deal to you. They do seem to have a continuous center rib which is unusual for a full blown off road AT tire but it's good for highway performance. Usually off road tires have a segmented center rib. Tire rack calls the ones with a full center rib "On road all terrain" which is what the stock pirellis are. They are good for mostly on road driving with a more aggressive tread than a regular mud and snow rated all season radial.

If you want dedicated off raod all terrain tires, I would look at the falkens or Toyos first. Nitto makes a nice AT tire, too. as does BFG with the KO2.

If you want something that will do better on road the firestones don't look bad but honestly I have a hard time trusting them.

I think they are great looking tires but as mentioned, the reviews from tire centric testers are not so great and the numbers on paper pretty much show that as well.

Personally, I'd never invest in Firestone anything.

There are better options. Open County's, KO2's, Wildpeaks just to name some of the best.

I would go with the Wildpeak AT3W. Reasonably light for what it is, great steering response, low noise (again bearing the tire in mind). All that and massively better than your stock Pirelli off-road and in winter weather.

I got a set last summer. They've been great so far, offer good street driving characteristics and increase off-road capability greatly over the stock tire. With the wheels and size upgrade I see about a 2 MPG difference overall

The whole Firestone saga around the Explorer rollovers was all about Ford blaming successfully in a public arena the tire manufacturer for the fact their vehicles had bad handling dynamics. Those vehicles are still dangerous today regardless of which tires are on them. So don't worry about whether the tires are good or not. Ford wasn't willing to take the blame so they found a good whipping boy. You'll note Ford completely redesigned the explorer shortly thereafter.

Sam,

I'm considering these Destination AT2s in stock Lariat 225/60-18 sizing and debating these vs. Yokohama Geolandar G015s, same size. Leaning toward the Firestones based on your video review.

I'm looking for better traction on sandy campsites towing our small camper (we actually got stuck this weekend with worn down all seasons and couldn't make it up a dirt road to the campsite!)

I'd rather not upsize the tires (fuel economy; I'm putting a lot of miles on this truck) and I don't intend to swap the stock rims. I need these tires to perform well on my daily SoCal commute as well.

Do you think these Destination AT2s in the narrower 225 size would still perform reasonably well for traction on basic dirt roads?

And thanks for your content, subscriber here!

Cheers,

I would look at some comparisons on sites like Tirerack to get some of these answers. I can only speak to the Firestones which I have been happy with. Now with about 7k miles on them, they seem to be wearing well.

Thanks for your feedback.

I went ahead and installed Firestone Destination A/T2s in stock 225/60-18 size a couple of weeks ago. I have about 1,400 miles on them now.

Thus far, I'm quite impressed. On-road dry traction and overall handling and grip are significantly better than the (admittedly end of life) Michelin Primacy all seasons at 60k miles. Did one little stint pulling our camper uphill on a sandy dirt road and I can report that traction was greatly improved with these A/T2s (y) and I'm really pleased.

Tire/road noise from these Firestones (in my stock size) I find to be similar to the all season tires while overall comfort seems actually better (!) which probably has to do with new rubber versus worn down tires. This was my main concern going to all terrain tires, and these A/T2s perform much better than expected in this regard.

We haven't had any rain yet, so I can't offer feedback on wet handling. I might add some notes here after some big rains, but other reviewers indicate that wet performance is great.

@Shay reported noticing additional rotational mass on the 245 size A/T2s (these are 33lbs each). The 225 size A/T2 is much lighter at 26 lbs. which is so close to the 25lb stock Michelin all season that I cannot tell the difference.

Fuel economy: on my freeway commute I'm looking at a drop of just shy of 2mpg and that works out to be about 5% worse fuel economy on these all terrain tires versus the all seasons.

That seems a reasonable tradeoff for MUCH improved traction and dirt road capability.

So overall: these Destination A/T2s seem to be great. Time will tell how they wear.

Cheers!

Any thoughts on making a tire review video? There's not a lot of videos on that tire, plus a maverick ownership update would be welcome 🍻 I'm closing in on 22k miles on my 23 XL hybrid, stock contis are still looking good, but I'll be upgrading to something better for gravel roads when it's time to upgrade.
