Recently my Maverick has had trouble catching the next gear when it is up shifting. It only seems to happen once after a cold start usually on my way to work and not as often in the afternoon after sitting for 8 hours. It happens under 30mph on moderate acceleration so I am assuming 3rd or 4th gear.

I will be accelerating and when it goes to upshift its like it goes in to neutral for a second, the revs increase but no change in speed and then it catches the next gear and I continue on.

I have not brought it to a dealer yet because its intermittent and I dont want to be without a vehicle for who knows how long. + the local dealer seems to be reluctant to handle warranty work and there handling of recalls is less than desired.

Once the truck has warmed up it is fine.

The realistic way of handling this is to contact your preferred service center, describe it as you have here, and leave the truck with them overnight. The following morning the tech will come in and start the truck cold to try and reproduce it.

Possibly low trans fluid level . expands as warms up . Unfortunately in Ford wisdom no trans level âś” ing from engine bay . Ford eliminated that dip stick .

I see that on mine right when I start driving. Coming out of my driveway, there is a minor elevation increase down the street and it seems that the timing on the shift up coincides when the engine would usually rev up to climb the hill. So, I have tried to get a little more speed going into the hill to avoid that.

I will say that I notice it less if I give the truck a minute to warm up, which also ensures the transmission is properly lubricated. I mostly notice it when I am in a hurry and just jump in the truck and run.

Normally, I get in, turn the truck on, wait for Android Auto to finally start running, put on my seatbelt, turn off the seatbelt nag, and then put it into gear. That seems pretty sufficient enough to get things lubed up.

Amazon has Dip Sticks - just search for your Transmission type or an older vehicle that used your Trans. Just put in the Fluid Add hole in place of the Cap.

That is the area that skips 3 rd gear for most driving conditions . We have eight speeds but for 95% of driving conditions it is programmed to skip that gear . May still be a fluid level / heat issue .
So we truly have 7 speed useable unless opened up via tune .
it is really not required too though as :

https://advancedtransmission.com/the-new-ford-8f35-8-speed-transmission/

still check fluid level though.
Other posts I’ve read say it is skipping second gear. But moot point because 2nd and 3rd are so close to each other numerically.

I wish they would have made first gear like 9.0:1, then second gear 4.69, then third up with stock ratios. So then you would start out in second gear with normal road going modes, but start in 1st gear if you’re in rock crawl, mud ruts, etc.

Brings back memories of Chrysler, I think, 1950's 2 speed with automatic overdrive = shift lever down 1st/3rd in town or shift lever up 2nd/4th for highway.
