I am really struggling on the topic of buying the ford extended warranty for my 2024 Maverick. To be clear I have only bought 1 extended warranty and that was 25 years ago when I bought a Mercury Villager (Nissan made) and the only reason I bought is because if I did not use it then I would get 100% of my money back. I did not use it and got my money back. My car buying model up to Covid was to drive mostly Fords for 5 years 60k and then trade. I have bought new and sometimes 2 yrs old or newer depending on market conditions and loved the fact that the drivetrain warranty and roadside assistance was there for me if I needed it. I did not have to do much besides oil changes and tires, sometime brakes. I actually did quiet well with this model because I would keep the car super clean and always got top dollar when selling/trading. Now the car market is screwed up and I am getting old. I can say this truck is exactly the perfect vehicle for me. Its small (fits in my small garage) it gets great gas mileage and can tow a trailer when needed.
My dilemma is do I buy the Ford 100K warranty for $1350 + tax or do I take that money and invest it in the S&P 500 and take a bit of a gamble? I can research and find pretty easy the guys who bought the warranty and used it and I can find who did not buy the warranty and fought with Ford but how many guys have over 60k on your truck and no premature failures? Are there any of you out there?

That is all up to you, but depending on your state, you could just buy one from Granger Ford on here. Seems to have been the best price for most people here as they appear to do it for cost.

Buying a warranty is buying piece of mind. You may need it, you may not. Odds are you will not if you make it past the initial warranty period they give you. It’s like buying a washer or TV. They try to sell you an extended warranty and the so called experts tell you not to buy one. But, some TVs fail as do washing machines. It all comes down to what Clint said. “Do you feel lucky? Well do you?”

I believe in Hedging take $1350 = buy warranty, another $1350 = S&P, another $1350 and buy lotto tickets (or buy full rolls of scratch offs which have a guaranteed return = example:
  • Over $7.7 million in total prizes in this game!
  • Pack Size: 150 tickets
  • Guaranteed Total Prize Amount = $83 per pack
( Scratch Ticket Prizes Claimed as of July 19, 2024. )

There are approximately 13,210,350* tickets in Hit $5,000.)
If you feel lucky: I'll let you figure out how many $1 scratches you can buy to try to get to "WIN" YOUR $1350 X 3 BACK!

Interesting you got your money back 👍

Trivia
The Villager was produced alongside the Nissan Quest by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio) from MY1993 to 2003 alongside the Ford Econoline/Club Wagon. Nissan design.

I know since the wife and I worked there at the time. In fact the Villager/Quest expansion was the main reason I was hired to work there in 1991. Made some Nissan friends back then and taught them perch and walleye fishing, still hear from them occasionally, mostly fishing stories. When the Villager/Quest ran it's contract cycle it was replaced by the Mercury Mariner version of the Escape in 2005 at OHAP.

Prior to that Ford built the Mazda Navajo alongside the Ford Explorer in Kentucky. Ford design. I worked for the Budd Co. in KY producing sheet metal assemblies for the both until moving to Ford and back to Ohio in 1991.

I bought one. I'm good for 6 years, 72k miles. Had never intended to... But saw that Mav had enough initial quality issues that I thought it prudent. Ideally, in a perfect world, I'll never use it...

Is that site now making F650, F350, and other heavy duty/super duty trucks now? If I recall, the Lorain Ford Truck plant is closed now. I haven't really followed what's happened to all the ford plants since I moved to Tennessee in 2001. I know that Walton Hills Stamping plant is closed, and the Engine plant in BrookPark is much smaller than it once was.

Correct, OHAP builds the BIG Fs now, F450-550-650-750, F350 is at Kentucky. Meanwhile the entire area west of the plant grounds up to Abby RD is under construction with huge new buildings for a new un published product. $1.5B for an all new commercial electric vehicle, whatever that means.

Lorain plant has been closed for many years now, those employees absorbed into OHAP when the final assembly for the E series was moved there.

Brook Park Engine Plant #2 closed in 2012, EP #1 is still pumping out 2.0l-2.3l-3.5l Ecoboosts.

Lima is making the 2 Nano V6s and 3 Duractec V6s

Walton Hills stamping, sold and demolished.

I thought I was going to buy an extended warranty shortly after buying our ‘23 new, but then decided to hold off until we came closer to 3 years/36k. I have no idea if we will still own it by then (could sell it, lose it in an accident, or I get hit by a bus, etc…). Even if we do dtill have it later on, I have far better things to do with my money right now for the next 3 years than to try and save on a warranty now, by buying now , when the price is lower. If I did nothing but buy a CD @5%, my interest earned will still be equivalent to yearly price increases on the warranty. And after 3 years, I might change my mind on what I wanted for a warranty in the first place (IF I even still have a Mav by then).

I bought the extended warranty for peace of mind AND the fact that I paid for it in today's dollars. Repair costs might double in the next five to ten years that was also my line of thinking.

To me the answer was obvious, it's a Ford and it's loaded with computer modules that will go bad, get the extended warranty. It's not if something will go wrong, it's when. With all the CX axle issues with these trucks it's almost a must unless you drive over 100k a year.

I hope they don't go too heavy into EV's - Ford is building a huge battery plant in western Tennessee, a little northeast of Memphis, and another one in central Kentucky, a little ways south of Elizabethton. I home that they have some flexibility on the use of these buildings.

While I'm not against electric vehicles - they have their merits - trying to force them on the people is just wrong.
