I am not a mechanical guy and do not know how to remove the whole tire from my car to spray paint the steelies black.

Has anyone left the steelies on and painted them black. If so, how did you do it?

To get this straight, you want to paint the wheels while still on the truck. (With spray paint...)

Do not do this. It will look like crap you will get paint on things you dont intend to and or shouldn't (like your rotors)

Either learn how to dismount your wheels and do it off the truck. Youtube has 1000's of videos on how to change a tire/mount a spare

Or plastidip may be an option but that is not a spray on product(i think)

Definitely remove them from the Maverick before you paint them. or you could get them Powder coated black. Costs more but it will last longer than paint. and Please don't plastidip your wheels. I have done it. It won't last a year. It's terrible to remove.

I can change the tire, but not confident on the painting part of the process.

I painted mine but do it in a garage so there is no wind, and paint many very light coats. Worked great! The one picture is when I pulled it out of the garage.

Not taking them off is the lazy ass way. If you choose to do it this way, you deserve all the paint and rotor overspray. Unbolt them off the truck, clean thoroughly with paint thinner then scuff with fine grit sand paper for adhesion. Mask the tires then spray.

If your dead set against paying to get a pro job, I would definitely take them off one or two at a time and lay them on cardboard, mask with paper of some kind and you can use an old deck of cards around the rim to bridge the gap from the rim to the paper without having to play with painters tape. The paint quality is going to be much better if painted while laying flat as opposed to upright.

OK Sorry, your post sounded otherwise.
There are at least two videos online, about painting the rims, with the tires attached.
One was done Very Well!!
I must add... ;)

I commend your effort, but there is still the chance of OverSpray to deal with ...

Just make sure you do in in a closed garage that has ventilation. I did not have any over spray problems with the spray paint I used. And do very thin coats so the paint does not run since the rims are vertical.

Just use plasti dip. If you get it on anything it comes right off. It wont be as permanent, but it's better than ruining anything.
