Sure, we remember the Ford Ranchero and the early Rangers, and we love our Mavericks, but does anyone recall the Mustero? I sure didn't until I came across these photos of a what it would look like if the Ranchero and the Mustang had a baby. Definitely a unique combination.

Still miss my '85 El Camino. Such a great car for me at the time, and turned a few heads too. Sadly, Michigan winters ate away at the body and when the transmission started slipping I had to let it go. The guy who bought it had plans to restore it but I never saw it again...probably scrapped.
I bet that vehicle would find a new audience today. If you're interested in a show about rescuing those classic cars, check out the TV show, "Lost Car Rescue".

Looks like a good idea, the backseats in those cars were useless, except for a small dog.

That's right. Back then, people did not consider any vehicle with a bed as a "family" car. All that has changed which is why we're seeing 4 door trucks with luxury amenities. Hardly a two door truck in sight these days.

Like a couple of others, I don't care for the '68 Mustang/pickup, but the '66 isn't too bad. I've never seen that concept before, but I have seen a stationwagon based on a 1st gen Mustang.

Google the 1979-82 Ford Fairmont Durango 2 dr pickup. Ford had 212 (or so) of these built and sold. Also the Dodge FWD Rampage and Plymouth Scamp in early 1980s. Rampage sold decent numbers but 1983 only badge engineered Plymouth sold just over 3k vehicles and was dropped after just 1 year. The Subaru Brat and later Baja were built with welded in seats in bed to qualify for a station wagon loophole in tariffs so they could be imported intact unlike other small import pickups which had to have beds installed after being imported to avoid tariffs on completed truck imports. Weird “station wagons” with rear seats but no roof over the bed. To everyone else they were still pickups.

Back in the 60's I certainly had no need for a pick-up of any kind, but had they appeared at this time in my life? Maybe.
A stationwagon? Family muscle car? Seems an oxymoron.

The Subaru Baja had a real back seat and 4 doors, unlike the Brat.

1979-1982 Ford sold about 212 Ford Fairmont based Ford Durango 2dr Ranchero type pickup trucks. All but forgotten today. Rare but not enough demand to be very expensive. Pretty practical, though. Google them for more info and photos.
My dad had an 1982 Mercury Cougar Station Wagon. It was a nice looking car for the times and a nice ride but had little acceleration with freeway cruising gears.
It looked like this one color and all but this one is missing the round chrome cougar hood ornament.

I only saw one of these... (Cougar) in the wild years ago..
These are actually, Fairmonts...
The Mustangrancho, I had seen a few at car shows (one's held at Ford Dealers) back in the late 1980's - Early 1990's..

Yes, they were glorified Fairmonts but above the Merc. Zephyr. The Cougars had an optional 3.8 L V6 with an upgraded tranny (Locking torque converter in overdrive (4th) gear). One of the problems we had with this vehicle was bad gas which fouled the cat converters. There were three of them on that car. We also had a 1978 Red Fairmont with the vinyl wood grain side panels. I mention these because the Station Wagon style wasn't far from being able to be converted to a "Ranchero" pickup if someone would have wanted one of them.

Even for a weekend trip I would love to drive this thing. Thanks for showing it.
I am impressed by the ambition. Its as frivilous as something like a Miata, just with alot more heads.

I dont know if they actually made very many of these but its pretty cool.
