It exists in all direct injection turbos. But we don’t have to worry. We can’t load the engine enough with it being an auto.
In fact it’s very very rare on the 2.0 in the st. When they went twin scroll and heavy boost low in the mustang and focus rs it started to show. Mainly the rs.
Certain oils eliminate the issues all together. Amsoil is one. I can’t remember the others.

Look for the oil ratings SN+ or Dexos 1 Gen.2. Lowered calcium and increased ZDDP have helped a ton.

It has not been commonly seen in the later versions on the EB, but it first reared its ugly head in Ecoboost and Ecotec engines.

Keep em clean, feed em good fuel and using good lubricants goes a long way.

LSPI is another interesting thing that comes along with pushing these little motors as far as we have. Amazing really, the economy and performance we are getting out of 122 cubic inches.....

I have a focus ST with bolts on and a tune and I specifically do not floor the accelerator when under 3000 RPMs because of the higher risk of Detonation. Although "Pre ignition" and "Detonation" are two different things that are often confused, Detonation can actually cause Pre ignition. Pre ignition is classified as "anytime something causes the mixture in the chamber to ignite before the spark plugs fire". Detonation happens when "the combustion process moves too fast and the pressure peak occurs too early, the result can be excessive pressure, excessive temperatures, and unstable pressure pulses"

Often times with a tune, you'll see colder spark plugs or spark plugs that are gapped differently to help avoid pre ignition or detonation. Smaller turbos with early peaking torque in the Rev range definitely have a higher risk of detonation

Find a 5W-30 or 0W-20 oil that isn't API SP/ILSAC GF-6A/Dexos 1 Gen 3. So the problem is solved and no one should care unless they're tuning to crank the boost way up at low RPM.

hey go buy this oil that's low sodium and only $15/quart, it will take care of it. or you can also just warm up your engine before giving it the beans!

one of those suggestions is obvious and one's ridiculous. you decide which. :ROFLMAO:

Neither of those help with lspi. The tune can definitely help, along with oils and fuels. The cooler plug keeps those and surrounding area from damage. And the smaller gap is only to keep the spark from being “blown” out with the heavy charged air.

Well they were one of the very first to figure it out and launch an oil to stop it.
Was a very hot topic in the focus rs world. They were only one of a few that had a 5w50 to start with then the lspi addressed. So like many things the first ones to find it and fix it will get some credit. Now several other have adapted.

What are you talking about? The Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W30 spec'd in your manual meets SN Plus, moreover any oil that meets the Ford spec WSS-M2C961-A1, also spec'd in your manual has to meet SN Plus, to in Fords own words, avoid oil derived LSPI. Not sure you actually read the article......

Something in this post is ridiculous, you decide which.....

LSPI is LOW SPEED PRE IGNITION. It is simply Pre ignition happening at low speeds... I read the article. Thanks. Like it or not the Maverick Ecoboost ENGINE is very similar to the Focus ST Ecoboost ENGINE.. That's why I mentioned it..
