We're looking at moving to Phoenix in the coming months. For people who live in the Phoenix area, or nearby, how are your Maverick's holding up? We currently live just south of Salt lake, while Utah has more temperature variances than Arizona, it doesn't get as hot here, maybe 100-105 in the summer on the hottest days out here.

From my understanding, Phoenix will have periods where you're dealing with 110-115 degree heat for weeks, sometimes months on end. I'm just concerned with how that's gonna impact the lifespan of our cars. Any tips beyond trying to store it indoors and periodically topping off engine coolant? Is it really such an issue that it's worth worrying about?

I live in the Tucson area, about 100 miles south of Phx, not quite as hot. I have no issues with my Mav, I do keep it in the garage when not being used.. Would definitly recommend remote start as that will get the ac working in advance..

I have lived in the Phx area for more than 70 yrs. Hot summer temps are hard on the lead -acid battery, and radiators. Most auto makers seem to have solved the radiator issues. Can't say the same for the battery. It is important not to have a dark color and not to park your car in the sun. Covered parking is important. Rust issues have not been an issue (ie no road salt). The a/c system in the Mav seems good, so don't think that will be a problem. With a/c use MPG will go down. I used to have a Prius, had no issues with the hybrid battery. I think hot temps are not as bad as cold wet climates for most cars. But temps have been on the increase; so not sure what will happen in the future. I think you will be OK. Please do not leave pets or kids in a car, even in the winter

If you're constantly topping off coolant, you would have issues. These vehicles should have no issue dealing with Phoenix heat.

For me, a must-have where there is a lot of sun is a shade for the windshield. I even take one to Hawaii and use it in the rental car.

Here in the Sun Diego CA area, I use it beginning in spring to reduce the heat buildup on the dark blue dash.

Agreed. A sun shade is very beneficial. Couple that with some good tint of your choice and the interior will be ok. I got a sun shade a couple weeks ago and it’s so noticeable how much cooler the interior is.

To go along with that. I’ve been out West to Vegas a couple times and 100 degree days don’t feel the same as they do in the south. I live about 3 hours from the coast and the months of July and August when the humidity is 100 percent it makes you wanna cry lol

Let's just say it won't be great for it.
Let's be honest.

It will be fine for a few years but the longevity WILL be affected.

On the hottest of days performance WILL be affected. Power and MPG will both go down.

It will get you to work. For a few years. And by few I mean 6 to 8 years.

Heat (and letting them sit long periods without use) are two of the worst things for a hybrid or electric car.

The hybrid battery starts to be affected at 105°F and will start to require air conditioning above this.

At 115°F the power output is drastically lowered.

At 135°F you can't use the hybrid battery at all. This is internal BATTERY temperature not necessarily outside air temperature.

How hot is the pavement?
The hybrid batteries are under the truck, really close to the pavement. The 12v battery is INSIDE the truck. How hot does the inside of the parked truck get?

Ford has engineered the cooling systems to make it work in all climates. (Imagine a window sticker "Not for sale in AZ, NM, or South TX) Not going to happen.

However, longevity will be reduced.
That's just part of the cost of living there.

I never leave home without one. All my vehicles have tint and sunshades. Best way to keep your interior cool. Sun ,UVs and Heat will Crack the dash in a few years. The interior of a maverick is pretty fragile as it is. Scratches dents easily I can only imagine what the sun will do. And don't leave any water bottles in the vehicle. I've seen the sun magnifying effect where it burned the interior have fun in Az. Great place to live.i plan to retire there.

I’d pay particular attention to the engine lube oil. Maybe a higher viscosity rated oil, like 10-30w or even 15-40w. And full synthetic of course.
If I was living in very hot clime like in SW part, I would practice letting engine idle running cooldown after a long drive. This lets lube oil and turbo bearings section cool down, not allow oil “coking” to occur. Of course some say using synthetic minimizes any drastic effects after long drives in hot climes.

Any don’t forget transmission fluid.

I've been in the valley since 2006, being a SoCal/NorCal transplant and I've always had a garage that I actually use...as a garage to park my vehicles in and I've had no issues...I keep my vehicles waxed, clean, always stay on top of oil changes at 3k to 4k using only synthetic and I had all the fluids changed every at least every 60k but I would do that no matter where I lived. Also note that I have another home/cabin in the east mountains about 170 miles 1 way and somewhat hard driving up the mountain and have never had any issues. Even when I was living in San Diego, where I was born and raised, I pretty much did the same thing. So change your wiper blades every 2 years at the most, do a coolant flush every 2 to 3 years depending on your driving mileage and change your oil and use synthetic and you'll be just fine!

Your Maverick will laugh at the desert heat, as it's been through testing in places worse than Phoenix. You, on the other hand, might not :)

One thing I quickly learned in Arizona was that the smartest path to a car isn't necessarily the shortest one, but the one with the most shade enroute. Also, a good local tint shop is worth its weight in gold. Ditto for a good windshield sun reflector for long stays in parking lots.

See Shay's youtubes on Maverick in Phoenix. He posts on here, too.

I live near Phoenix, picked up my maverick last June-

The air conditioner works good for people in the front, but whenever my wife rides in the back seat, she's always complaining about the heat... The under seat vent for the back seat is a nice touch, but kinda falls short.

Any summer afternoon drives will be done without much help from the hybrid system-

When it's hot, it seems like the battery doesn't want to accept charge...

But, mine has been reliable so far, so I can't complain.
