The alternative is to call your representatives and tell them to write a bill banning Ford from collecting and selling your info.
That's not really an alternative since it's not going to immediately change anything. It's a good start but even if that is successful it will take several years for something like that to happen. I'm not saying it's worth doing that, in fact I like that idea a lot but for anyone really worried about the data being collected right now they only have two real alternatives. Either take public transportation or own an older vehicle that does not collect any data.

I admit that I'm usually the first one to say that I don't care about data being collected because I have nothing to hide. Heck, I've probably even called others who were paranoid "Wearers of tin foil hats".

But honestly everyone should be unhappy about this. How would you feel if you found out your insurance rates were being increased because of the data that Ford collected and sold? Because that's exactly what GM was being accused of and they are now changing their policy on the data they collect. Unfortunately GM isn't going to stop collecting data entirely but they are now saying they are no longer going to sell the data to certain data brokers. It is concerning and consumers should want to stop this data from being sold.

So, who needs to plug the insurance companies little device into the OBDII port? If they want to know if you're a risk or not they just simply need to "buy" the data.

Frankly, if they want to know why it is they see a sudden burst of throttle, speeds in the range or 80 mph for about half a mile then a gradual decline to the posted speed limit of the area I'm driving, I'll happily tell them; in fact, I'd happily take them there and show them. I simply like to "blow out the carbon" as we used to say in the old days, and I do so in a rural stretch of road which is wide open, straight, and has no trees for animals to suddenly appear from. If they think that makes me a risk, I can install a dash cam and show them the footage of my daily commute and the actions I must take to preserve person and property of the others they insure which should erase any concern on my part.

Yes, in our so-called modern society there is no reason to believe we have any sort of privacy. Nearly every device you have can be IS spying on you. The concern is who is receiving that data and for what purpose.

You can unplug it on the modem altogether, about this time last year another user went over this. If I recall correctly he outright removed the modem. How long do you think the back up power supply lasts?
If it’s anything like the 12v battery in these trucks, I’d say about 10 minutes 😆

Here is the privacy policy that you agree to when you sign up for FordPass which includes the following:

"We may de-identify information we collect about you and use it for any purpose in accordance with applicable law."

Of course even if your location data is "de-identified" it can still easily be linked to you.
Wouldn't bother me much, as a government worker, all they will get is me going back n forth to work. I don't travel very much anymore.

this actually a very serious problem and GM in particular has been selling information about each OnStar owner's driving habits to all insurance companies without their permission. See https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/11/technology/carmakers-driver-tracking-insurance.html . Ford, however, sets the default on your Maverick not to share insurance-related information. Your can view this by scrolling through the settings on your Maverick. GM now faces massive liability, in the billions, for their misconduct.

That's why I always wear my tin foil hat while driving.

First Facebook, then TikTok, and now my Maverick is ratting me out. It's a good thing I used a fake ID to make the purchase. Ford thinks a guy named Rafael Hokenstraker in Peoria owns my vehicle. The joke's on them!

Trust me, this is probably the least we should be worried about when it comes to tracking and selling our info. Everyone is doing it. Apple, Google, Facebook, instagram, X, your credit card company app, game apps, you name it. They all are doing this so it this point why even bother if Ford is added to the list. The government has 6 ways to Sunday to get you if they want to.

You people so worried about your privacy, there hasn't been privacy for a very long time now.
And why do you think anyone would be interested in your life anyway? To sell you something? - Don't buy it. To track where you've been? - what do you care? To track your little day to day habits? - again, what do you care?
Unless you've really got something to hide - what do you care?
I know you'll say I'm missing the point, but I think you are.
Who cares.
Or just wear the tin foil hat - that's how they really get you.

Wow, you just do not get it ! You live in MI with no fault and one of the highest insurance rates in the country. Do you really want the Manufacturer to sell the info off your telematics unit to insurance companies or given to law enforcement and lawyers ?

Yes I do!
Maybe the crappy drivers will get their insurance raised - even ticketed, I'm all for that. I think people that don't use their turn signals should spend a couple weeks in a jail cell paying 4 time what it cost to put them there. Send them the tickets and court appearance dates automatically.
I can see if you're a crappy driver or cell phone enthusiast you wouldn't want
your "telematics" monitored.
I invite it.
So... you don't want your insurance company or law enforcement to know how you drive huh?
