Contemplating purchasing a hybrid, have had other questions and this forum has been great with info.
My current question is can you start the ICE independently? As if you wanted to prime the engine after an oil change?
Thanks guys

Hybrid owner here, but I still haven't changed the oil on mine yet.

There’s no button to press to start the gas engine. However, I notice that the gas motor on mine always starts right away (as soon as the key is turned on) when the air temperature is below 30 degrees.

Other things to do (besides driving it) are turning the air conditioner on to Max, and turn the thermostat down to the lowest setting. If the engine doesn’t start right away, it should start in 15 minutes or so. You can also try turning on the heat and setting the thermostat to the highest setting, maybe the engine will start to provide heat.

Last, I have heard that if you turn the key on and floorboard the accelerator (still in Park) the engine will start. I’m not willing to try this on my own truck. Probably not a great idea, especially not with a dry oil filter.

You might be able to side step the issue by pre-filling the filter with oil before installation and then carefully adding the remainder of the recommended amount of oil to the crankcase. Then after the first drive check the oil and add whatever fraction of a quart that might be needed.

Fill your oil filter before putting it on. Its 0W20 oil, so the engine will be primed after about 1 second. There is no point in running the engine to prime it.

You don't have to "mash" the pedal to the floor nor hold it there.

You just need to "flick" the go pedal about 25% for less than a second to start the gas engine at will.

Absolutely no harm.

Once started, shift to "N" and the engine won't shut off.

Mash on the gas in Park and the ICE will fire up and stay running at idle speed (not sure how long).
When in park (actually at anytime) pushing the pedal quickly to floor and letting off will start the ice and it will run until the HVB is charged to 40%. If HVB is at 40% or more it will stop almost immediately. In which case you can turn max AC (heat or cool) for ever how long you want ice to run.
Actually when you turn truck to ready status everything to start the ice is done and if necessary I would expect the oil filter would be filled and ready to do it's thing.

I'm pretty sure that if you put the "transmission" in Sport mode, the ICE runs, by default.

Above answers are correct. Sport and tow haul run ICE any time car is moving forward. When in park ICE usually shuts off for me in these modes.

Pressing accelerator pedal while in park will start engine. I remember doing so after oil change before.

I didn't think it's harmful to use accelerator to start gas engine.

Here's an excerpt from the owners manual: (see last paragraph)

Thats not what I meant, I don't run the engine to prime it. If a filter is horizontally mounted you cannot pre fill it fully, in those cases I hold the gas pedal to the floor to put the engine in flood mode which disables spark and fuel, you can then crank it. I didn't give a good example, my fault. I only wanted to know if you can run the ICE independently <-- That is what I should have said.
Your engine will never prime within a second!
Thanks for your input

Putting the gas pedal to the floor and holding it is called flood mode, all modern non hybrid cars can do that, it disables spark and fuel to clear the system in case of a flooded engine. My Ranger's filter is horizontally mounted which will make more of a mess, so I use to use the flood mode to only crank the engine, this way I can prime the engine. Been doing this for years and it works well, when you cannot pre fill the filter.
I worded my original question weird, that's what I get for trying to create a post at 5 AM.
Thank you for your input.

A member had a scan gage on his hybrid and the three phase starter/generator had the rpm reading at just over 800 rpm within a second. No clue how quickly the oil pump comes on, maybe before??? In any case if you had the ice at temp so your oil would drain quickly there would be a film of oil on everything. The ice is designed to turn on and off frequently.
