2023 Hybrid- rear brake rotors show the outer 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter not in contact with the brake pads....no wear shown. I have not seen anything with this topic, any thoughts?

haven't seen this discussed on a maverick before, but I had a similar issue on an 08 Milan that got isolated down to warped rotors from over-tightened lug nuts. Might want to check that those are correctly torqued, especially if anyone's been on them with an impact wrench at some point.

Truck has less than 6,000 miles and wheels have not been off vehicle as far as I know. Vehicle was purchased "new" - from dealership.

I had new tires installed on mine under 100 miles, by the dealership. Definitely over-torqued them. If they tightened them at all during their inspection/detailing/setup when it showed up on the lot, could explain it. That's the only cause I'm familiar with for rings of no contact on the rotors, but I wouldn't claim to be an expert. Worth checking.

Good luck in your troubleshooting.

One possibility is that the brake pads are not wearing evenly across their surface, which could be due to issues with caliper piston movement, brake pad material composition, or improper brake pad installation. It's essential to inspect the brake pads for signs of wear and replace them if necessary to ensure optimal braking performance.

Additionally, caliper misalignment or sticking caliper pistons can cause uneven contact between the brake pads and rotor surface. Inspecting the brake calipers for proper alignment and ensuring smooth piston movement is crucial for maintaining consistent braking.

@JimmyJ Does it look like this?

I ended up leaving them alone and driving more. I figured the caliper couldn't be stuck being that new - similar to yours. I think it's that the caliper ears or the pad being stuck on the outside isn't square to the rotor and it just had to bed itself in with use. Eventually the friction material wore down and got full contact to the rotor face.

Yes, that is what I see. That "wear" pattern shows on both rear rotors. Will have it checked when at the dealership.
Thanks for your pictures.

Well.... brought truck into dealership in Brighton Mi. for a couple of recall items and had brake technician check brakes - says that it is normal..... I have not noticed that wear pattern on other new vehicles, hybrid or not- outer 1/2" to 3/4" diameter of rotor not being utilized. Looks like there is an opportunity for Ford brake engineers to reduce cost as there is braking area not being used and apparently not needed?? Brake rotors can be reduced in size and brake pads made smaller as well
Was told to wait and see what happens.
