Oh my God, do you really believe the regenerative braking isn't done by the brakes? But only by putting your transmission into low and slowing down that way? With no brake light on and the car behind you wondering wtf is going on?
I think we answered the original posters question of why so many Mavericks are getting rear ended if this is a common belief.
BOTH braking and just slowing down without braking regenerate the brakes. Yes, putting it into low regenerates them even more but there's no reason to d do that and many reasons to not
"You still use the brakes to actually stop" - wow
Do you really have a Maverick? Are you driving it this way? Thinking it only regenerates the battery when you're using your transmission to slow down rather than the brakes?
You don't need to put it in low. And yes, regenerative braking is done without the use of the brake pads. Have you never seen a hybrid or EV before now? These are basic things. You seem very upset over very common things that seem to bewilder you.

Regenerative braking can be done without the use of brake pads but it's also done with the use of brake pads. That's my point. Just use your brakes.

Regen doesn't use the brake pads at all. It only works because it's done by the electric motor. The brake pads engage when you need additional stopping the regen can't provide.

You will regenerate your battery by using your brakes.

You really should do a little research on regenerative braking and how it works.

Because the Brake pedal engages the Regen prior to engaging the Disk Brakes.

Which is what I've been saying. Brake pedal does not equal Brakes in a hybrid.

But this is why Mavericks are getting rear-ended. People are believing the way to regen the battery is by using the transmission without the brakes. Putting it into low and stupid stuff like that. Just use your brakes. Of course the brake pads themselves aren't regenerating the battery. But the vehicle slowing down does and the brakes slow it down. Geez.
Just use your brakes like a normal car. It will regen

I highly doubt regenerative braking is causing people in another vehicle to not be paying attention to the physical world around them while driving. It is poor drivers who have their heads up their own ass who are causing these accidents. Short of an arm reaching out and smacking the driver behind you nothing will make them pay attention. The only 2 times I have been rear ended in my life have been while I was stopped with my foot on the brake. People just do not pay attention anymore.

That's all true. So many smartphone enthusiasts out there. But why not at least give him a break light?

I usually get about 75000 or more miles from my brake pads, I leave enough space I can coast to lights or stop signs with minimal braking. I have once had
someone hit me while still moving, and that was someone tailgating, and I had to slam on my brakes when an idiot pulled out suddenly. I have been rear ended 3 times at a stoplight over the last 50 plus years of driving, including one guy who between myself and a state police car. Distracted driving is a problem, cell phones are a big part of it, but the nanny driving aids being installed today make people feel they do not need to pay attention. Everyone should have to learn on a manual transmission with drum brakes, maybe then they would leave a little more space and slow down.

I'm simply saying why not use your brake pads to stop?
Is this really a point of contention?
People want to use the low on their transmissions? - their automatic transmissions??
The low position not really a low gear, like what you might be thinking of from a traditional automatic transmission. When off throttle It's either stronger regen, or engine braking. It's not much different than pressing the brake peddle. The pads on a hybrid hardly get used at all.

OK, I give up.
The consensus is to push the low button and I guess just before the guy behind you rams you because he's playing with his phone and you haven't activated your brake lights - then maybe hit your brake pedal.
With the title of this thread being why are Mavericks being rear ended I offered why don't we just drive the hybrids like a normal vehicle and slow down and stop using - the brakes. It still regens.

Friend of mine was driving home from college with her mother in the passenger seat. They rear ended a semi that had stopped, and ended up in the back seat. They needed a crane to lift the semi off the car. We know she was not texting, but was probably arguing with her mother about what route to take.

Honestly, I chalk it up to complacency. Nothing more and nothing less. People now days like to use their vehicles as weapons not realizing it doesn't matter who is right or wrong when you are dead. And I speak from experience growing up as one of them. It's so much worse in congested areas where traffic is always around you. People simply don't anticipate the worst scenario anymore and drive too aggressively.

Drive patient. Create distance. Pay attention.
