Jiffy Lube -You had One Job!

My plan to use my points for an oil change at the dealership were put on hold as I didn't want them to do the blinker recall at the same time, given all the reports of electrical issues right after the recall was done,so...............

Like a dummy, I decided to take it to Jiffy Lube for my first oil change @ 1820 miles. They have Penzoil Ultra Platinum synthetic, and I've been happy with that oil in the past. I request that oil in a 5w30. Even says 5w30 right on the oil filler cap.

Get all done, pay for it, and layed on the ground to check the skid plate was put back on correctly. Looked good.

Get home, and look at the reciept. It says they filled it with 5w20. WTF! How hard can it be? Oil changes is all they do! 5w30 right on the cap, for crying out loud.

Now I have to go back and get it changed again. Atleast it'll be free, but still.

I'm starting to think they're all out to get us Maverick owners. All of them. It's a conspiracy.

Had it been September or October, I probably would've just let it ride, since the cold weather would still be on the way, but I don't think I want a 20 weight in there with the heat of summer coming.

no, you did the right thing and gave Jiffy an opportunity to correct it's issue. you could have saved another big problems.

Lesson learned - never go to Jiffy Lube. Personally I'd be changing it back myself and double checking everything including the filter.

Nothing wrong with changing out the break in oil early though.

Many engine manufacturers recommend NOT changing oil early due to the extra additives/lubricants that are used in engine assembly. I don't believe there is any type of break in oil but I'm sure there are lubricants used in engine assembly.

Replace a camshaft or crankshaft (lifters, bearings) and you are to use a special assembly lubricant. That lubricant will remain in the oil until oil is changed.

Years ago (1960's to 2000"s maybe) engines weren't built to such tight specifications and oil's didn't lubricate like synthetics do now so there was concern about metal wear and particles getting in the oil thus on bearings so an early oil change was recommended.

I would not recommend changing engine oil early for that reason, unless told to do so by the engine manufacturer. Most important is to use a high quality oil filter, there can be a huge difference in filter filtration.

You are only going to hurt an engine by leaving oil in for too long, not changing more frequent.

Just do at it the Ford recommended intervals and you will be just fine. If you haven’t read the book, 3000–5000 for blends. 7500–10,000 for full synthetic.

Wut? No. The point is that you can't hurt anything by changing more frequently but you can by changing not often enough. That's all. Don't overthink it.

There is nothing wrong with changing oils more often. Break in or not. They don't recommend changing early because it's not necessary as the oil is still viscous enough for it's life on normal intervals, not because the contents of the manufacturing lubrications help at all (as you claim). You took my comment entirely out of context and have now turned this into an oil debate

It’s not worth the risk (and a few bucks savings) to go to any quick oil change place. If something happens they won’t cover repairs unlike dealer.

I am speaking from experience. I took a previous new car to one and they stripped the oil pan bolt. Fought them to fix it but they refused. Ultimately had to have the dealer replace the pan. Couldn’t be fixed which meant jacking the engine up to replace $$$!!

Bottom line is spend a few extra dollars at the dealer for insurance and peace of mind.
