Cab Roof Tent (Prinsu Rack) released for Maverick

So Prinsu finally released a roof rack for the maverick! I think it's great quality and opens up a whole bunch of options for the Maverick. I added roof tent quick release brackets for camping.

To install you have to drill holes in the roof to mount (which I prefer over cleat systems) but there are clones of the Prinsu that clamp on. I just don't trust them with dynamic loads.

Very nice! I had a Prinsu rack on my Subaru that required drilling the roof - it took two applications of silicone around the holes for me to completely seal the holes. You're right though, bolt-on is superior if you can stomach the install.

Sweet rally setup on those bikes btw.

Drilling holes makes me nervous, but I am glad it worked out for you. Great looking setup you got there. I want to build a rack for the bed that I can install a tent like that on, but I probably never will.

I have what is probably a stupid question. Is there a reason for having a tent on the roof of a truck or car?
I guess I am old school, but why not just put the tent on the ground like we always did?
Although I did have a Honda Element with the tent on the back hatch and could put a full size air mattress in the back.
The roof thing still just seems strange to me!

I guess I am old school, but why not just put the tent on the ground like we always did?
Although I did have a Honda Element with the tent on the back hatch and could put a full size air mattress in the back.
The roof thing still just seems strange to me!

I tent camp 90% of the time from a motorcycle in the dirt off grid so I don't mind the old school way. But I love my significant other and roof tents have mattresses and stay clean from dirt and water.

Much more comfortable and convenient basically.

The sag is a bit concerning.

Because I have a leveling kit so any weight in the bed throws off the distribution. I am installing Air bladders in the rear struts to adjust for hauling weight.

But I'm not towing a trailer so it's not really that necessary. Just an easy, cheap fix.

There is a company that makes a clone called "spider racks" that doesn't require drilling.

I don't mind drilling holes and prefer bolting it and mounting over the bed was a no go for me.

Looks good. Im working on a project currently to bring our RTT down to ground level. Im mounting it on the hitch. I have long wanted a roof rack for our Tremor that matches the one I made for our topper. Im just not willing to drill out the roof unless its to install something thats totally aluminum. I have seen too many steel racks rust after a couple years. If this is indeed all aluminum I may have to look at it, once budget permits of course.

The Prinsu rack is all aluminum - the sides are laser cut and the crossbars are 10 series 80/20 style aluminum extrusions. I had my Subaru rack through three PA winters with road salt/brine and it was still corrosion free. Can definitely vouch for the quality, but yeah 900 bones is nothing to sneeze at.

I've seen some of your install threads - I'm sure with a stack of 80/20 sections you could come up with a sweet DIY rack!

Why? You can get much better quality and roomier for on the ground at much less cost and be able to set up in any spot. You're able to use the truck without breaking camp and not loose gas mileage because of the added wind resistance... and you don't have to climb a ladder (BTW bears and snakes can climb). To each his own but I think most buy them because they saw them on an ad and think they look cool.

I'll bite. As an avid ground camper, with 2-person and 6-person tents, you definitely can't pitch a tent everywhere you can park a truck, so that's one advantage of a rooftop. As OP mentioned, they're convenient, as setup/pack up time is less than 5 minutes - my 6-person takes minimum 30 from in bags to full of beds and more than that for repacking. Even my 2-person takes me 15 minutes and I'm pretty efficient with it.

The mileage hit and initial buy-in are both pretty big drawbacks, but for certain applications rooftop tents are ideal. I won't argue that some people buy them for the cool factor or novelty, but I'll always espouse the advantages despite not having the use, space, or budget for one myself.

I started to have dealer remove the factory aluminized strips and install 8 riv nuts in the roof where the factory holes are while he had headliner down for air bags recall. Couple years ago there were threads where people were removing the channel trim and using those holes but we're having difficulty getting access to the rear nut on each side. They had Ford documents showing location of the for bolt on locations on each side. I don't know how hard it would be to replace the threaded stud on the channel trim with a pass through hole?
