How long have you lived in New Hampshire? It's called the granite state for a reason and we have timber rattlers. Lol. But I agree a tent on a truck is just a bear piñata. That's why I built this.

Most of my life in New England. Except the regrettable 10 years in Florida. So over 40 years. I guess I found nice soft areas to camp. Its been a long time though. I like beds too much now.

Nothing wrong with fear. It's not a bad word lol. A survival mechanism to keep yourself out of trouble. Which is exactly what you're describing :). Totally understand!
Ok yes I am afraid of pissing off my wife who daily drives the truck.

So Prinsu finally released a roof rack for the maverick! I think it's great quality and opens up a whole bunch of options for the Maverick. I added roof tent quick release brackets for camping.

To install you have to drill holes in the roof to mount (which I prefer over cleat systems) but there are clones of the Prinsu that clamp on. I just don't trust them with dynamic loads.

I bought mine here for $860 & free shipping.

I'm pretty sure rooftop is a Cali thing and makes a lot of sense there. Scorpions, rattlesnakes, rocky ungraded ground, etc. Staking a ground tent on rock 'aint gonna work. The Sonoran and Mojave deserts are quite large. Pretty sure you can drive all day and you're not going to be camping in established campgrounds. None of this applies to the Eastern US, IMO.
Nah, its an Instagram thing.

We live/camp in Cali, all over. Deserts, mountains, etc. RTT is a fashion accessory. Better use for a select few people in select few circumstances. Most just have them sitting on their commuter taco/subaru to tell their co-workers "I do cool things on the weekend" - while getting much lower hwy MPG.

...but ask me how I really feel. :D

I was worried the truck would be a hair small for what I wanted to use it for but so far it packs a lot with no downside.

I get better gas mileage with a RTT on the maverick than when I'm camping on my larger motorcycles. Truck = 38mpg Motorcycle 35mpg

While I get to camp places you can't drive a truck, I definitely get worse sleep in a ground tent.

If your argument is people do it for attention, then look in the mirror... we (you and I) are posting on a forum about frivolous things *gasp for attention.

The whole RTT and overlanding scene has really taken off - because of social media

Has it taken off or are you just spending too much time on social media?

Yep RTTs have a nice solid floor. Easier to make comfortable. Pain to get in and out of though, thats why Im bringing mine down on to a hitch rack platform so my wife can just sit down on it. Still high and dry, but more around bench level. So its also a chair!
Have you made this yet?

There is a company that makes a clone called "spider racks" that doesn't require drilling.
That is a cool mounting system. I found a video of installation on a Toyota but I do not think we have the same groves in our roof. Someone should try them out and post pictures.

Installed an Ikamper over the bed. I raised it up with a taller rack to get me off the ground a little bit. The prinsu rack was added afterwards
