there is no way to install a "dubbler" or backer etc in that space, there is multiple panels that come together as a structure where these mount, its probably id say the strongest junction on these trucks as unibodies.
I wonder what the underside of the roof looks like

The roof rack would provide an unobstructed view out the back glass but is substantially less capable of carrying a load compared to an over the bed rack system

I like the look though, but decided to go over the bed

Can you please provide a link to support your statement about a bed rack like yours, that is substantially more capable of carrying a load, than a roof rack?
Bed rails as a structure are no where close to as stong as a roof seem. I get the fact its way easier to bolt on some clamps for a rail type system but your statement doesn't add up to me, maybe I'm wrong, but most "basket type" like you show are rated for about 100-200 usually
everyone ive seen is rated at or less than this set up, which is rated 400lb moving load, 800lb parked

Nice work! I can't commit to that with the drilling and non-reversable aspect of it.

But I love it!
just to be clear, if desired you could always purchase new roof rail trim pieces and plug the 3/8" holes up and install new trim, back to factory look.

I didn't look at this some, but have chopped many roofs in a wide range of cars/trucks. most have about 3-6 layers of 16-20 gauge or thicker metal formed into one with flange for structure where the roof skin, b pillars, exterior skin reinforcement, etc all are spot welded together.
in many cars-trucks the roof holds a huge structural aspect of them.
in classic cars, most convertibles have beefed frames, and added lower structures to support the lack of roof.
been in the custom car world for over 30 years..

My statement was an opinion but as we all can acknowledge how structures are supported can change the load rating if you were to suspend the Yakima MegaWarrior using the outer bars the load rating would only support the stated 130 lbs but if supported it underneath the weight capacity would greatly increase adding a third crossbar would only increase this although my two crossbar installation transfers the load capacity to the crossbars which are rated at 500 lbs each distributing the load to the outer edges of the crossbars then transfers the load capacity to the truck bed - I’m not saying the roof mounted option is not a good one just saying the bed mounting option allows you to increase the load rating the roof mounted is what it is the bed mounting option allow you to increase the load rating using additional supports to max out the truck’s capabilities

Yea, I have a 92 mustang convertible as well. I just figured with the Mav trying to be fuel efficient would not have so much structure on the roof.

so again, you said a bed rack will hold substantially more weight than a roof rack, yet you posted above the same weigh ratings for your bed rail mounted cross bars. not to be a jerk just saying.
FYI I have had 2 of those basket types rust out with in 1 year of use on a car that was garaged everyday.
