Should have done it earlier with some random VINs to try the car insurance. After 2+ year long wait, my Mav is finally built and I am able to plug the info into my car insurance quote (as a 3rd car). To my big surprise, the monthly premium jumped up by $200. That is probably too big bullet to swallow. Anybody here have similar experiences? Need to seriously think whether to take the Mav or not. Thoughts?

I can think of several options:
* take it and sell it after a few months, with the ~5000 transition offer, hopefully I can break even
* depart one of my other two cars, at this time they are low mileage and I still like them though
* not take it

If I decide to pass and the dealer is not greedy, somebody here might check it out. Cactus Gray XL + hitch + CP360 in SoCal.

If departing with one of your other cars will bring it back down and you have more than you need, you could rotate them in and out of the insurance if that's desirable. Not sure if you would want a winter driver / summer driver.

Just don't have the wrong one on the road at the wrong time.

Also, what the heck insurance? I wondered keeping my current car as a beater after taking the Mav but would pay a extra monthly for that car with no collision. If liability covers drivers and there are 2 in my household how does having a 3rd car with no collision up my premium? Seems crap logic.

Thanks! Good idea to rotate them in and out. Yes it seems dropping the insurance premium down a lot.

It is tesla insurance FYI. It is already cheaper than several other insurances I quoted to cover Tesla. So I have to deal with it even though I agree with you it is crap logic for the 3rd car premium jump.

$1200 every 6 months for Maverick insurance?

May want to shop around. I pay $353 every 6 months with State Farm for my 2022 Lariat Lux hybrid.

As others suggest, shop around. Insurance rates vary greatly.

My Maverick is my least expensive vehicle with State Farm. Because of the extra safety equipment. Less expensive than the 2018 and the 2011 Ford Escapes. My cost with State Farm for the Mav is about the same as Gullsway. I was pleasantly surprised when the Maverick came in about $50 less every six months than the 2018 Escape. Didn't see that coming.

Seems to be high, I pay about $85 per month in an high insurance area. In case you have more than 2 drivers listed on the policy the third car can become one off the persons primary car. Be sure to drop any drivers no longer living with you. Also adjust annual mileage on the other cars.

Agree, but if I understood correctly he uses Tesla insurance since they were lowest cost to insure the Tesla vehicle plus it’s in California
Explains a lot

Suggest you do what I did when GEICO’s quote for the Maverick was too high.

Went over my policy and increased deductibles for all vehicles from $50 to $250. The quote included mechanical breakdown, roadside assistance and rental car, none of which I needed.

Making the changes brought my 6 month premium down significantly.

combining homeowners insurance is a huge difference. it's been a long long time since I rented, but if you are not a homeowner check to see if you can get a discount with renter's insurance.

state farm and allstate have been the lowest for me each time I've checked, which is annually for the past 5 years. state farm wins on cars and allstate wins on house, but when doing both, allstate has been the winner - by slimmer margins every year. this might mean next year I'm switching to state farm, IDK.

the days of having an agent you trust and use all your life, and rates from that agent that others cannot match as long as you don't have any claims, are long gone. :cautious:

We're paying $550.00 a year for the Maverick. That is with 2 discounts, house and Jeep with same company and we pre pay all for the year. My previous truck, an 05 Ranger was $475.00, same coverage so we made out alright.

Yes, always best to steal a VIN of a comparable vehicle off Auto Trader and give it to your insurance company just to make sure.

If you've been with your insurance company for a while, always best to go shopping around for quotes. The old saying familiarity breeds contempt rings very true with the insurance industry. .

Weird my insurance went down. I had a 2020 Ford Ecosport SE AWD now Hybrid Mav xlt went down 100 every 6 months so 200 savings for the year. Gieco.

You pay 200 a MONTH!!!! 2400 a year!!!!!!!

Get a quote for a standalone policy with another insurance company.
Mercury is pretty cheap in CA for cars right now.

Thank you all for your very informative replies! To confess, I did have a not small car accident two years back, so I am aware and willing to pay the current high premiums as the consequence (~200 a month including a EV is not that bad in California in current market). Waiting to pass 3year/5year mark so it can go back. However adding another 200 a month on a 3rd car is ridiculous. My homeowner insurance is another story, barely any big insurance companies want to insure now.

You can't do that (and keep the vehicle registered and tagged).

Virtually all states require insurance on a tagged and registered vehicle.

Also, If there's a loan and vehicle payment, the lienholder/bank will also require insurance on the vehicle to protect their interest...

I expect all insurance to become harder to get. Claims are going up volume wise. Also the replacement cost of house has more than doubled requiring increased coverage. On my lariat hybrid maverick the ins discount for the safety features was enough to pay for the 360 safety option in about three years. Also if your credit score goes down your insurance might go up as it's factored in just like past claims are.
