I have 15K miles on my 22 xlt fx4 and the brakes sound destroyed.
I called the dealer and they said a TSB is present stating the components used in the brake pads will corrode if it is left out side when parked?????
They had no resolution other than a 39.00 brake inspection and 800 per axle to replace the pads.
I am not to sure about keeping this truck anymore.
Any input would be helpful prior to dropping it off on 12/12.
Thank you

Brakes are a wear component and no idea how you drive your vehicle but 15k miles seems a little too quick.

Whenever it comes time to do my brakes I always upgrade the pads to Wagner Severe Duty or ThermaQuiets.

$800 is a rip off for only pads. I can swap them out for you in an hour and drink a few beers doing it.

I wouldn't sell my truck because of some worn brake pads but to each their own!

Are you doing stupid things like 2-foot driving? 15k miles is awfully low for a brake job. It sounds like one of: you're listening to rusted rotors from not using them at all, you're riding the brakes, you have a stuck brake or slider and wore one side down, or you're awfully hard on them and need to stop driving like its a race car. Take it to a mechanic if you're not comfortable doing your own brake inspections. Brakes normally last at least 50k miles even in severe duty. Most people get 60-80k on them in a gas model, and at least 100k on the hybrid.

My other car sits outside for 4-5 days at a time. When getting in, the first few brakes you hear grinding of sorts as the rust gets knocked off. This is normal behavior.

If you inspect your brakes, pull your finger over your rotors and feel. They should be very smooth. If there are grooves worn in them that would indicate an issue with the calipers/pads interacting with the rotors themselves.

15k miles is very low for needing new pads. Normally, needing new pads is indicated by a high-pitched "squealing" of sorts during braking.

Pictures would help.
Rotors are bare metal. as Mentioned In wet/humid conditions they start to rust pretty quickly.
I work from home, so don't do a lot of driving. My brakes grind when I first get in because it's been a few days parked.

Rule of thumb, never pay for a dealer brake job. There are plenty of independent shops and chains that do guaranteed brake service and some won't charge for inspection.
Google is your friend in this matter.
$800 per axle should cover pads, calipers, rotors and a night on the town.

Yep, don't get your brakes done at the dealer especially at that price. Plenty of other places around that will do just as good a job if not better. Unless the OP wants to try and press the issue should be covered under warranty but like @710-oil-614 mentioned because brakes are a wear component well..... good luck.......

Forget the inspection and replace the brakes and rotors yourself. It's a easy install for

Check the brakes services sticky on this sub. Lots of crappy brake issues on these trucks, the Escapes and the Broncos. Just replace the pads and inspect the rotors yourself, but you need to put the vehicle in service mode for the rears to release the electronic parking brake. Apparently there is a work around for that as well but I haven't tried it.

Definitely cheapest of the cheap pads and rotors were used in these vehicles though. Skip that dealer, they are trying to rip you off. It sounds like they are trying to charge you for the rotors, calipers and pads which if they know it's a TSB issue, it should be covered under warranty.

What dealership is this and where?

Gonna step outside my normal mode and defend the dealer on this matter assuming they have actual ASE certified mechanics on the payroll.

You probably wouldn't go to a 5 star restaurant for a taco or go to a cardiologist for a splinter.

You'll get a similar sticker shock if you went to the dealer for a battery replacement or windshield wipers when Auto Zone will likely replace those for the price of the parts. Replacing pads isn't a whole lot different

These days, when there's a days/weeks wait to get in for a tech to do a diagnosis reality should prevail.

Hybrid brake pads last a long time I've had a 2008 Prius with 137,000 miles on t and the original pads that were at 50% when I traded it, the 2013 V had 108,000 when the Maverick came in, the shop looked at the pads and asked when the last brake job was, he was astounded when I told they were original, so you're driving to fast and stopping too short.

Life is an adventure, not a race.
