I agree the Taurus name was kind of a weird choice, but I don't think Galaxie 500 would have been a good fit either. I think Ford was trying to come up with a totally new name for a new kind of aerodynamic car.

As far as Courier ..... sounds kind of ....... old. The Ranchero like the El Camino was a 2 door. The Maverick being a crew cab, don't think the Ranchero name would have worked. I like the name Maverick better than Courier or Ranchero, but yeah, they could have come up with an all new name perhaps, but I think Ford was trying to stay with a western/horse name. A number like thier full size pickups wouldn't have worked really. There is already the F-150. The Maverick being smaller would have had to have been a lower number. F-100? There was one in the 1950-s. But then they really couldn't have made it a seperate brand like they are planning to do now like the Bronco name plate. In the end, all things considered, the Maverick name fits along side Mustang and Bronco. If there wasn't already a Ranger, that name would have been a no-brainer, but at the time they chose to re-use the name for the current one, I don't think they planned on bring back a compact truck until recently.
Just a minor quibble. Maverick refers to unbranded bovine, not equine. Hence the steer horns in the original Maverick logo.

It should’ve been called Ford Pinto with all the recalls, fires and issues lol

Ranchero would’ve been a good fit too, since it’s built in Mexico.

But Maverick also fits.

Why don't we call Mavericks "utes"?

Is it a car or is it a truck?

It’s not a ute but the Ranchero was…and the El Camino

my theory is that the Ranchero identified too much with a 'car' like truck, just look at that rakish front end!
while the Mav on the other hand is basically a F150 profile vehicle in a much smaller package, and seeing as how the F150 is and has been the bestselling vehicle in this great country for almost 1/2 a century and counting, car or truck thats probably not a bad thing. the Rancher had a pretty good run, from 1957-1979. maybe Ford lost the trademark?
who knows for sure? maybe Maverick just tested better than Ranchero with focus groups.
BTW your photo of that smoking hot Rancher is very cool (oxymoron intended). is it yours & what year is it?

I questioned that early on myself. My Avatar reflects my history with the Ranchero and it seemed like a no-brainer to revive the Ranchero name vs. Maverick since there are so many similarities to the actual Ranchero vehicle. Much moreso than the Maverick which was a lower budget Mustang like compact Pony car for the masses in the 1970's.
100% plus at least the Ranchero was a truck while the original Maverick was a poor attempt to respond to the oil embargo in the '70s

Honestly the name really turned me off this vehicle.
im old enough to remember what a Maverick was, and would prefer to forget those memories.
but 90% of potential buyers would need to Google it to know and likely wouldn’t understand…
I‘m still torn, is it a truck or did they build a sedan and forget the trunk lid (as I shop for tonneau covers)…
Ranchero seems like a good name to me but again it’s due to age and context, the majority of buyers probably wouldn’t understand or possibly identify with it.
as for Courier I just verped…
End of the day I looked at one, drove it and I’m placing an order on Monday for one so Maverick is good enough of a name for me.
'verped'? not sure ive ever heard that particular expression B4 but i get your drift.

My son has a Mustang.
I tell him that I'm jealous. He has a horse, I have a cow.
My other vehicle is a Bronco so I have both a horse and cow...well bull, sounds better!

I wonder what Ford's reason was behind reviving the Maverick name? They probably did focus groups. I don't have any problem with it but being an old guy I remember the original Maverick isn't exactly a fondly remember name like the Ranchero. They could have easily called it a Falcon since Ford did build a truck (UTE) in Australia by that name for many years. I guess Maverick sounds more macho. I think they reserve the "F" series for the big trucks and give names to the smaller trucks like Maverick and Ranger.
