Drivers rear running lights not working....

Here is a new one.....

Was outside my truck with it running and realized the two "red" bulbs on the rear drivers side were not illuminated. The passenger side was just fine. I immediately thought "this sucks, those are also my turn signals and brake lights......". Gonna get pulled over by the first cop who sees me.

Here is where it gets fun.

Brake pedal turns them on as usual. Left turn signal activation flashes them as usual. So......what's going on? As soon as brakes are released or turn signal is turned off, off go the bulbs.

Thinking "this is clearly software related", I turned off the truck for about 30 seconds. Turned it back on, no difference. Dang..... Turned it back off and went inside. Tried it again about half an hour later and guess what!?!

Now I live in fear it is going to happen again and I won't realize until I get pulled over. Guess everyone needs a little fear in their lives.

Have you checked to see if you have a recall? I know some MY23 Maverick's with 4k tow were recalled for issues with the rear lights.

Clean for recalls according to the NHTSA website with "Recall data refreshed on Nov 15, 2023".

Seems to just be some electrical gremlins or something.

I had the same issue last December. It was super cold when it did the same as yours. It went back to normal two days later.

Interesting......sort of want to report it, as tail lights are sort of a big deal. But I don't want to deal with the hassle. Haha.

Not THAT cold. Maybe mid 40's.

Next time, try turning headlight switch off and on, I have seen a few other threads about this intermittent concern, I believe turning the switch off and on resolved it, for the time being...Will probably be an update for a module to solve this concern, eventually...

Yes, there are LED bulbs back there. And that was my first thought (that my bulbs went bad). But as soon as I saw the brakes and the turn signal caused the bulbs to illuminate, I knew it was not the bulbs. Plus, it was both "red" bulbs on that side, not just one. I assume if one bulb "burned out", the other would still work. Right? Might need to test it sometime when I have the lighting housing off.

But from a fundamental standpoint, it seems like no current is being sent to those bulbs at all when the issue is present. So type of bulb shouldn't matter.

Remember there's no fuses on the external lighting, so if the LEDs drew too much current or the resistance was abnormal the BCM would have detected a circuit fault and shut it down which would explain why it affected both.

Yes, the lamp type can matter due to the resistance, just like in household lighting using LED bulbs and dimmers (not intended for LEDs).

reinstall OEM bulbs and test.....
