I'm looking for a timed option - manual switch to power the led light strip on, then it turns off after 20 mins (don't want to drain battery if left on / tailgate open / etc)
Anyone done this yet? Would it be a relay vs switch? My googling hasn't found the answer yet...

LED strips draw so little power it wouldent matter if they stayed on all night, however the power going back to the bed is timed to turn off automatically after a certain time anyways. I once hooked a 12' long strip of #5630 LEDs to a 9v battery to how long it would take to kill the battery. It took over a week of continuous running to do that. Your fears are unfounded.

Awesome - that'll save me all the BS of finding some timer delay setup!

I connected my additional LED strips at the front of the bed to the LED's wiring in the bed (Lariat). Now they all come on and off automatically (or when I push the button, and then they automatically shut off).

What about a motion detector? However, I don't know of one that lasts for 20 minutes.

As I recall, mine was under the back seat.
My dealer didn't even know what they were! Who the hell is planting these things?!

When wiring them into the existing bed light, what do you do with the built in switch on the LED Cable. Do you leave the switch there and turned on? Cut the switch out and splice together?

I'd cut it out. The strip I ordered did not come with a switch. I just popped out the existing (Lux package) switch and wired it to it. So when the truck turns the bed lighting on...or I do it manually, all comes on.

I left the switch attached; two reasons; 1) didn't want to mess around with cutting and splicing and 2) in case I needed a backup switch. Small enough to hide in the space.

I did the same with mine. I tucked it in along the edge of the bedrug. I will likely redo all this better later, but in the interest of expediency, I used the harness in the kit.

I have 20 gage 2 conductor wire red/black inside grey insulation sheathing I will use to eliminate any plug in connections under the truck when I redo it. Will likely use a mercury switch inside the tailgate wired in with an on/off switch override. This way when I open the tailgate the lights just come on by themselves. Or the override switch I can turn them off if i dont want them on.

I like the idea of the lights coming on automatically and purchased a motion detector switch for the purpose, but balked at the install when I realized I would only need the lights at night. I suppose a motion and light detector switch would work. Hasn't been a 911 mod so I haven't devoted much time to it.

Your dome lights come on in the daytime when you open the car doors. This really is not much different in that regard IMHO.

I bought these for my XLT and haven't installed. Now I'm selling it because I found a lariat.. The Lariat already has a light in the back but after looking at how well yours is lit up, I am going to install it in the lariat..
