Many posts about how the size of the Maverick compares to trucks of decades gone by. Thought I'd post a trim level compare.
I found a brochure for 1988 F-150. Generally speaking, the Maverick XL is comparable to 1988 F-150 Lariat trim level.
Check out those standard tire sizes on a full size truck!

As a teenager, I towed many loads of corn to the mill with a 1988 F-150 Lariat 4x4 alpine green and chestnut deluxe two-tone . My Dad typically would not have gotten that high a trim level for a farm truck, but it was a parts runner truck for the Twin Cities Ford plant and he got a really good deal.

I kinda wish they would make a super-basic version with manual windows & locks, no radio, no AC, no carpet, and no headliner -- just to see how many orders they would get.

Ahem manual transmission cough cough.

80s F150 comparison says what? Technically that's a 93 to 96 same body though.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, and the brochure.

In late 1987, I ordered an '88 F-150 Custom, inline six, rubber floor (not carpet) and a slab bench seat. IIRC, the only other options I ordered were AM/FM radio and A/C. Gotta have A/C in the South.

It had dual gas tanks and held 35 (!) gallons of gas.

The dual tanks were amazing - until you ran down tank 1 and tried to switch over only to realize tank 2 was equally as empty

That in-line 6 was an awesome engine especially for towing. Dual tanks were great as well. Could tow 15,000lb loads of corn all day and not have to stop to refill. Was yours 4x4 or 4x2?

The low range on the 4x4 was great for towing. On the blacktop we would just unlock the manual front hubs and keep it in low the whole time. Relock them when in the fields. The closer gear spacing made for better acceleration to 30mph tow speed.

The other downside to the dual tanks was refilling. 200 gallon bulk fuel tank on the farm was hand crank. 8 revolutions per gallon!
The combine was worse, 100 gallon tank. When that was empty, we just called for the bulk fuel delivery truck from the co-op.

LOL Been dere, done dat.

At today's prices (currently $2.75 for regular here), it would take close to $100 to fill those two tanks.
On my Econoline 6 years ago I got only half of the second tank full before Costco cut me off. Barely 200 miles in that old 460 big block.

Even better when your switch wasn't labeled and you realized you were in tank 2!

1988 was the year I found a brochure with feature list. Correct 87-96 had minimal changes.

Yes! 5 speed manual was the best transmission for the F150. Thanks for the call out.

Loved that 6 and ordered it for its well known durability and torque.
Mine was automatic and rear wheel drive only. Didn't need 4WD where I lived, but I did want an automatic. The city where I lived was *very* hilly and futzing with a manual got old fast in stop and go traffic with lots of traffic lights. Did enough shifting in my work truck!

Orders in this country would be about 3!

The demand for a basic truck is underestimated. XL is the most popular trim level. And even more would sell if production constraints were fixed.
