The dummy in the back probably would have a basilar skull fracture from that head snap front to back.

Didn't look too bad to me. I sure have survived worse in far more dangerous vehicles. 70 mph combined impact with a IH ambulance in a 78 Econoline 150. Couple hundred stitches mostly on my face 2 facial surgeries, 2 skull plates(1 removed), and a broken collar bone. Sure do feel better driving my wife around in the Maverick.

An A grade is good for such a small truck. Looks like some major whiplash, which is to be expected.
It looks like most of the reduction in rating is from the rear passenger. Specifically calling out the passenger's head coming close to the rear of the driver's seat and the lap belt shifting upward.

The IIHS has started focusing more on rear occupant safety lately, starting with a report back in March on crossovers. Being an independent group driven by insurance company underwriting they kind of get to shift the goalposts to be more stringent as suits them.

Tuff little Bugga! Crush zone appeared to do its job. Glad it wasn’t Cactus Grey😉

Doesn't look like the dead pedal is where you want to place your left foot due to intrusion of the wheel crushing metal in that area.

Also if you have to ride in the back seat, make sure the driver is tall enough to have the front seat all the way back.

An "A Grade" is NOT necessarily good. "A" is for 'Acceptable. "G" is for "Good" - the best rating.

Caveat is that all of the other measurements and scores of this new test achieve "Good". It is the addition of the rear passenger score of "P" for "Poor" that brings the overall score down to "A".

https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicl...ckup/2023#moderate-overlap-front-updated-test

So long as you are just looking at front occupant safety rate, it is all "Good" :)

Wouldn't the rear passenger head then strike the driver's seat backside and cause more injuries?

No, not as much movement to increase the velocity of the neck, and padding of the head rest would absorb the energy.
