Since the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) introduced stricter criteria for its crash tests, small and mid-sized trucks have been struggling to get good ratings, particularly in the updated side impact test.

The 2023 Ford Maverick XLT Hybrid managed to buck the trend by receiving a "good" rating after being subjected to stricter crash tests.

Before the IIHS introduced the new tests, pickups generally received the coveted "good" rating, making them more attractive compared to traditional sedans and hatches.

However, safety scores started to drop as soon as the new tests were introduced. The 2023 Nissan Frontier and 2023 Ford Ranger were given an "acceptable" rating, while the 2023 Toyota Tacoma received a "marginal" rating. (The marginal rating does not apply to the all-new Tacoma, which still needs to be crashed.)

Pretty impressive engineering and results, no doubt. Hats off.
I agree! My truck saved me in a bad rear end collision. The driver was going 70-90km/h while I was completely stopped at a red light.

My truck sustained minimal damage but I'm still waiting to see if it's a complete loss. I'm thinking that it might be because the receiver was bent downwards.

Nice to know. I wonder about all the people waiting months seeing the trucks crashed.

Wow! Looks like the maverick took it like a champ for how much the other vehicle is damaged. Unfortunately a lot of mavericks are totalled even with little damage because of the body crumpling and too expensive to repair. Hopefully yours will be ok.

I was surprised on how little there was. I even drove it over 60kms around town to find an available body shop to get me a quote and hopefully repair it. At highway speeds I might add lol. It drove perfectly and I didn't feel anything wrong with it.
But the hitches are normally bolted or welded to the frames of vehicles and I'd imagine that because it's bent down like that, the frame is also bent. I've had about 5 body shops tell me that it'll be a write off because of how new the vehicle is, the supply of parts and the fact that it pushes the box side panels forward a bit.

So far, I'm up to $8000 just from the exterior damage. That's not even the underneath or behind the panels or tailgate.
At least I've enjoyed it for 1.5 years!

Wow that burly 4K tow receiver hitch may have helped the being able to walk away but maybe not so much for the Maverick :)

I agree. I think it was the receiver that crumpled his hood like that and bent his interior bumper. I "walked" away but dealing with whiplash, sore back, wrist and palm. A week so far with bad pain isn't fun! The police still can't find the guy :(

I’ve posted this before and will post again here - I’m incredibly pleased with the safety of my Maverick.

I took delivery of my truck on February 18th and on June 26th got t-boned on the passenger side by somebody running a red light.

I was driving, my wife was in the passenger seat. I bruised my shoulder on the b pillar, my wife was entirely fine.

The driver of the focus was in a bit of pain from his airbags going off, but was fine as well. My estimate is he was going about 30mph at time of collision.

The repair shop I went to replaced both doors, repaired the rear quarter panel and repaired the other damage. Cost was ~$6,000.

Yeah the sides of the box were pushed forward a bit. I'm not sure if it's only the exterior body panels or if it's something underneath. Either way, sucks!
It does suck, but there is no absorbing material in the back. The hitch pushes on the rails, and they bend super easy. These trucks total at 15-20mph in the back. Yours looks like it took much more than that. One rail underneath is $24K to replace. The only thing I HATE about the Maverick.

Looks like the idiot's front bumper was already rotting out big time. Not much protection left with that.

Glad the OP is OK.

Oh shoot! I mean, most vehicles are designed to absorb collisions and are write offs after little fender benders.
Oh well, hopefully they'll cover my car loan at least. Now I'm fighting for my injuries. Been a week I'm off work so far. Damn whiplash.
And the police still can't find the guy. Friggin hit and runs! Not a single person stopped either to see if we were ok. Crazy world we live in.
