Wait a second I am all confused. Call me slow. My hybrid mav just came in today and will have it shortly. The times in the past I used the parking brake when I was on a hill parking. I would pull on hill go to N then would engage parking brake to hold car in place THEN put into park. This way the weight of car is NOT on parking pawl. Can I do this now with hybrid mav?

Plus sometimes I would back up looking out driver door which I had open for better view. Not sure this is possible anymore? I know not the safest way.
Yes you can do it. Based on this post I am now applying the parking brake in "N", then I release my foot unit it holds it on the slope. I press the foot brake again and shift from N to P. I think that's a best practice.

On the way out I changed too. First shift, then push the P brake down. Although that one hardly matters because your foot's on the brake the whole time.

99% of the owners manual is CYA for Ford. The first time some chucklehead screws up his/her vehicle by doing something they shouldn't, they usually start pointing at the mfg'r.

So after reading all this I have a question. If I pull into my garage, have my foot on the brake, put the car into park. Does the park brake automatically apply? If I then come back out and start the car, does the park brake disengage when I put the car into gear?

No, and, no.

However..... If you apply the PB yourself, then put the truck in "D", the PB will automatically release as soon as you begin to apply throttle.

The parking brake is only to help hold it in place if it's turned off and parked....

If you pull into your garage, have your foot on the brake stay seatbelted then just open the door it will engage the parking brake. Then just either put in park or turn off the engine.
Then when you go back in just turn on the ignition and pull out in reverse. Parking brake disengages.
