Yes 87/88 octane
I would recommend a tank of premium before you tow it again. See if changes anything.

Premium is not that expensive. It's definitely cheaper than getting a different truck.

I've towed several thousand km's with my 2700lb travel trailer with and without premium gas, never noticed any difference in performance.

here's a decent torture test:

Worth a try, Thank you.

You mentioned your 2,000lb towing limit, do you feel you were over or even really close to it?
Yes, the Tremor does not have the tow package. Not the larger coolant radiator or the transmission fluid cooler. Additionally, you may not notice a difference using 87 or higher octane, say if the weather is cooler. Difference will only be noticed at high loads/higher intake temps when engine does indeed detect detonation, therefore retarding the ignition and lowering H.P. output.

I researched the difference between a Tremor and FX4 with tow package and came up with Radiator is smaller in a Tremor because of the approach angle and the suspension is much softer.

The Radiator and shocks are a big factor when pulling as I found out pulling my General sideXside over the Bighorn mountains of Wyoming. Not only did the engine overheat but the control also derated the engine to cool it down, right in the middle of a hard pull.
Also, the suspension is too soft to safely pull anything over the 2000 Lb limit.

I captured a photo of the overheating but not the derate, it basically stated the engine was derating to lower the temperature.

I pulled my small 5X8 camper up a gnarly mountain pass this weekend and saw similar results.

The trailer is clear under my 4K tow rating (probably weighs less than 2k) and falls well within the frontal area ratings too. I've also been running 91 all summer in preparation for these camping trips.

Going up one way, the coolant would occasionally go to the 5th bar until I turned off the AC (ambiant was 108 degrees, 7 degree climb for 2k feet). That was relatively concerning, but likely not damaging.

On the way home, there's an equally gnarly climb (85 degree ambient). I had it in "low" at roughly 60 mph (maybe faster?). I was watching the temps as I had the truck relatively pegged and it stayed right in the middle. I looked up for maybe 10 seconds and heard the bings and bongs to look down and see the overheat message and the coolant gauge pegged to Hot. Yikes. I immediately backed off the throttle and the temps were right back to the middle in seconds.

Not sure if I should be concerned or if this is a fluke. I was hoping for better performance to be honest, but I am also very aware how gnarly 7 degree climbs for 1-2k feet can be. Hopefully nothing was damaged.

this is not a commonly reported issue. the OP has/had a tremor, which has a smaller radiator because of the high clearance lower fascia.

how many miles are on your truck? has it ever had the coolant serviced? - some dealerships bundle it with 30k, 50k, or 60k service even if it isn't on Ford's official maintenance schedule because it's 'preventative' but really just for profit. or any kind of repair that would necessitate coolant drain and fill?

51K miles. Coolant looks really good, but I haven't had it serviced since I bought it at 37K miles.

Yup. Clean Carfax. I've only seen it get hot once and derate, and only while towing up a gnarly grade in hot(ish) weather. There's a reason that they use AZ to torture test cars.

I still don't think it's normal. I'd investigate coolant and oil for cross contamination.

did the service engine light come on, and any DTCs?

No CEL. I checked the oil and coolant at a rest stop and they both looked clean. I will check again in a few days.

I recommend that anyone regularly towing or hauling heavy loads invest in a scangauge, Torque app or similar OBD II reader to accurately monitor temperatures. It will give you much more insight as to what is going on than the Maverick's idiot gauges and warnings.
