I researched the difference between a Tremor and FX4 with tow package and came up with Radiator is smaller in a Tremor because of the approach angle and the suspension is much softer.

The Radiator and shocks are a big factor when pulling as I found out pulling my General sideXside over the Bighorn mountains of Wyoming. Not only did the engine overheat but the control also derated the engine to cool it down, right in the middle of a hard pull.
Also, the suspension is too soft to safely pull anything over the 2000 Lb limit.

I captured a photo of the overheating but not the derate, it basically stated the engine was derating to lower the temperature.

Well I guess I'm getting airbags and cutting holes in my hood for heat extractors. Just kidding we only have 1 mountain road and I have nothing really to tow up there.

My question is how long before you noticed the gauge without pulling over and how much were you towing? Did it just skyrocket to an overheat or did it gradually climb? Probably a good idea to get something that allows you to actually monitor temps while towing.

When I do mountain passes I usually put the AC on heat and blower on low to help with the heat management. I also do this when offroading. I know it can be annoying to lower the windows and turn the heat on but it has helped keep my subcompact car engine running in range when doing wild things

Agree. I feel that there are creative ways to place transmission coolers. They probvably avoided so they did not need to have another part with a different assembly line

to this, I'll add what was your fuel octane?

in this summer heat, towing in the mountains, I unfortunately think it's possible you had some detonation if you were only using 87. the knock sensor and octane adjust ratio can only do so much.

how's it running now? whether you had detonation or not, some damage could have been done when you overheated.

A 2-seat Polaris General is 1700lb-ish just by itself - so that loaded on a trailer without any extra gear, accessories, fuel, tools, etc would certainly be in excess of the 2000lb tow limit.

I guess thanks for abusing your truck for the sake of science? 🤷‍♂️

I wasn't literally THERE.

But my Hybrid in SIMILAR conditions only went up 20 degrees.
(190 std to 210)

So maybe best to worst for towing:

Eco with 4k
Hybrid
Eco with 2k

Also something else could be wrong with this particular truck. Not enough data to form conclusions

Good to know, however I disagree with you on to soft of suspension.my 23 ecoboost XLT 4k tow handles my 3100 lb boat as good as my full size hemi ram. What model maverick are you towing with?
