2 electric motors?

The January 2022 issue of Car and Driver has a nice article but it states "...base versions are motivated by a hybrid powertrain featuring a 2.5 liter inline four and TWO electric motors..."
I've not been able to discover anything about TWO electric motors on my truck delivered 1/28/22. What am I missing?

That's how the hybrids work. I believe that one acts as a starter and then as a generation to recharge the batter, while the other adds torque to the drivetrain? There are some videos on youtube which explain in depth how the Ford (and Tyota) hybrid systems work.

Electric generators and motors are effectively the same thing, only working in reverse. In most hybrid systems, the motor is the generator.

The transmission is actually composed of two electric motors, one that switches to generator when charging the battery.

This is indeed correct. There are 2 electric motors that are in a single transmission case. One is a motor/generator that is driven directly by the gas engine and the other is the traction motor which is not indirectly connected to the gas engine.

Edit: I read your statement wrong, we're on the same page

Motor: giving, imparting, or producing motion or action.

Smaller MG1 aka starter-generator motor:
* motor when supplied electricity to resist or exceed rotation of the ICE when it's running for cotinuously variable gear ratios; also motor when acting as starter for the ICE.
* generator when ICE is acting as power source to charge the battery.

Larger MG2 aka traction motor:
* motor when supplied electricity from HVB or in series hybrid mode to drive the wheels directly
* generator when regeratively braking

Look up CVT images on Google and you will see the Ford CVT and it shows 2 motors on it and one is probably a generator.

If I understand the system correctly, one is generator/gas engine starter, and the other is the electric drive motor.

The secret is not in understanding the two motor generators and an internal combustion engine, the secret is in understanding planetary gear sets. After watched numerous YouTube videos on planetary gear sets, I concluded, they are magic.

This refers to the Toyota Hybrid but essentially the same as the Mav. You can play with MG1, MG2 and the ICE in the interactive video - fun and educational!
