Those above are correct... the front airbag deploys when the deceleration from a frontal impact meets certain criteria and neither vehicle reached that threshold. The same applies to side impacts. This was more of a glancing blow (Though I am sure it didn't feel like it). As to whether it is a total loss, most adjusters (I was one for 40 yrs) will consider it when collision repair costs reach about 60-70% of its retail value. They then also factor in rental car use and other factors, such as loss of value due to its having been wrecked. Some states do not allow that but most do.

I worked at a car dealership, and if the insurance companies value the vehicle anything like a dealership, all your add-ons are for your own enjoyment, they add zero to trade in value.
That is until the dealership sells the truck with all these wonderful add-ons.

Don’t know what part of Alabama you’re in, but if it’s north west, and you’re not opposed to a little ride, Cartersville, GA Pugmire had 4 mavs on the lot the other day when I had mine serviced. They didn’t fix my recall though even though I specified I wanted it repaired during my appointment when I made it and they had the truck from 8:30 am to 5:15 pm
Dealerships are strange animals, when it comes to recall work, you need to make an appointment for that recall, the dealership needs to ensure they have the parts to fix the recall. I made my appointment for my recall 3 weeks ago, 2 days later received a call that they have the parts, and when I inquired about a loaner, the push back began. After applying some logic, the guy on the phone backed down and I will get a loaner while the truck gets the new airbag, grabby update 2.0 and fluid change.

I'm not an expert but it looks like your Maverick took the hit closer to the headlight. The airbags would deploy if the hit was more head-on or more towards your driver's door
I concur, not the deployment points, you missed a face smacking, eye burning experience…that tundra was hateful

That’s the thing, I verified they had parts and told them when I made the appointment I wanted The Works under my maintenance plan and the recall repaired and they agreed they could do it. I didn’t need a loaner since I was off work and had a ride. They didn’t ever call to say it wouldn’t be done. Call me that it’s done and when I show up to pick it up, they didn’t have time…. What? It’s ridiculous

One thing I have learned, if when dropping off the car is to go over with them WHAT is expected of them before leaving... IF you had done that, then I wouldn't have picked up the Mav, and asked for a loaner. This is how you push the dealership to do things right.

Sorry for your trouble.

I would have thought the Tundra would fair better in the match.
I thought the same thing.. That Gen2 T100/Tundra took a beating..

Last weekend, my Maverick was involved in an accident at a traffic light-controlled intersection. Both I and the other driver claimed we had the green light. With both of us entering the intersection, his Tundra with a cattle guard struck my front left fender with his right front quarter. Both my wife and I were belted. I was thrown toward the passenger side with sufficient force that I struck my wife. I and the occupants of the other vehicle were uninjured. My wife suffered deep tissue bruising of the chest and leg which continues to be a source of pain with movement. I was not found at fault by my insurance company. I don’t know whether the other driver was.

My concern is that no air bags deployed in my vehicle. I’m attaching photos of both truck to evidence the force of the collision. I recently had the side air bag recall procedure completed on my truck. My question for the membership, especially those who might have auto engineering expertise, is whether there is an expectation one or more air bags should have deployed. I raise this as a possible continuing safety issue on the Maverick. If Ford has a representative monitoring MTC, I will welcome their input. Is there another agency or Ford element it would be appropriate for me to address my concern?

I’m awaiting the result of the collision center’s assessment. I would be surprised by anything other than the truck being totaled. Now, I begin the search for a replacement (VB, hybrid XLT, lux package, 360, SIBL, front tinted window, X-15 soft rollup cover). So far, I have struck out with Alabama dealers. Before the accident, Carvana and CarMax gave me offers of 31-31K.

So glad that everyone made it out safely. The way SRS systems work is; the vehicle detects a crash is occurring, and at what speed, and where, and all of that. Vehicle speed is a big factor, 90% of crashes under 20mph result in a no-deployment. Based on where you were hit I’d say the vehicle made the correct choice to not deploy them imo. Regardless of vehicle speed. Sometimes the burn from the airbag is worse than the bruise you’d get without it.

They will not go off just because there’s a collision detected, and they’re not there to prevent ALL injuries from occurring, but rather prevent severe trauma. IE hitting your steering wheel with your pearly whites if you were to rear end someone.

I’m not trying to come across as rude, or downplay how much that must have sucked, I got tboned in mine after 3mo of ownership and it sucks. I’ve had a few accidents in my day and it’s not a fun time.

My mother had a brand new at the time 2017 Mustang EB Premium with like 9k miles on it, that got tboned on the drivers side door by a distracted driver doing almost 60 miles an hour when he ran the stop sign. Popped the car on two wheels, spun it around, and the car landed 100ft off the road in a ditch, in the sign for a church. Popped every airbag in the car, however, 911 assist called the police/ems who got there in minutes and cut her out of the car because the whole drivers door had crumpled into the dashboard. Took her to the hospital and she walked away that night with a few burns from the airbags. That’s the scenario where the burns outweighed the trauma it prevented.

Regardless, I wanted to offer you some explanation and hopefully a little peace of mind that it did what it thought was best to protect y’all. Hoping for quick recovery for the minor injuries 👍

Similar experiences at my dealership. I think the customer service aspect has gone out the window with recent staff shortages - or maybe wasn’t there to begin with.

It takes around 30mph to fire off a DERM (diagnostic energy release module) to inflate an airbag. If they still use that technology.

What is interesting is that Recall 22S47 (Modify Under Engine Shield) specifically states the the dealer will provide you with vehicle pick-up and delivery and a rental free of charge.

Recall 22C20 (Side AirBag) does not have the above language (free rental).

Recall 22C20 (Side AirBag) is estimated to take 1/2 of a day with no free rental yet Recall 22S47 (Modify Under Engine Shield) is estimated to take an hour and comes with a free rental.

Makes no sense to me.

I think they are splitting hairs with this.

Ouch. Also another VB down :(. Glad everyone was mostly ok. Like others have said it might have been just a bit too far forward and maybe not quite enough impact. Still probably better for them to go off tho.

No frontal air bags should deploy, as you were hit from the front side. Side curtain airbags should only deploy if your doors are hit. Looks like it worked as intended.
I agree. Remember, airbags are intended to prevent serious injuries. The airbag deployment itself can cause contusions and bruising or possibly much worse (hence the reason for the recall).

Sorry for your accident, especially a VB. As one that has done a lot of body work on antique cars that certainly does not look like a totaled Maverick. It your Maverick engine was still running that is a good sign. The Toyota weight and steel cattle guard certainly helped the Toyota and the Mav with thin sheet metal was no match. Vehicles today have so many plastic parts that are glued together, makes for difficult reconstruction.

Regarding insurance coverage, had a 911 Porsche stolen a few years ago and insurance covered an added Alpine stereo, speakers, camera and $500 in CDs in the cd changer... all reimbursed from my receipts...all dependent on coverage and deductible. Your accident further encourages me to get a dash camera.
