Anyone switch out their sync to sync 3 to get the navigation option. As of now the navigation package is only available on the Lariat. Anyone who has compared satellite navigation to cellphone based navigation knows how much better the satellite navigation is.

I think cellphones use satellites now too.

...but I get your meaning - sounds like you prefer the onboard nav to the phone. I bet it's at least a bit more consistent in how it operates.

That would be a fairly major undertaking and somewhat pricy but I seem to recall someone on this forum has done it. Search around you should find some info

Is the Lariat sync 3 nav self contained, or does it work thru a cell phone?

I'm curious why you think the Sync 3 Nav system is better than the available Cell Phone apps, like Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze.

I have the Nav in my Maverick and have used the similar Nav system in my parent's Corsair and I find it to be inferior in almost all ways to the Cell Phone apps. The maps are older (seems like last updated in 2020 or so?) and there's no update available ATM.

It's self contained, you don't need a phone.
Guess that could be a good thing when they bad or no cell coverage, myself paper atlas 🤪. But 90 % time I know where I going. My family laughs but that ok, what you do when that electronics breaks 😳

I don't know about the GPS in the SYNC3, but Waze updated maps almost immediately and my old GPS could take months to update. We had a new exit off the Interstate the was on Waze the day it opened, and it took a couple of map updates before the GPS got it. I'm perfectly content using cellphone GPS (Google Maps, but especially Waze).

IMO this is one of the stronger arguments for onboard nav. However, there are mobile apps available now which can save large areas of mapped territory so it's available even when you're offline. At that point, it's doing exactly the same as the vehicle nav - listening for satellite signals and combining that data with the stored maps. Given the access to a USB charge cable, your phone would even be running off the same power source.

There's always a case to be made for redundancies though. 🤷‍♂️

My Lariat will (if it ever gets here) have NAV, but I will also have my trusty Garmin with me at all times. When the screen in the truck freezes or goes out, I will still have help.
