I recently bought a Kia Sportage for the wife and have been driving it for a few months waiting on the Maverick to arrive. Got the Maverick last week. Both the Sportage and Maverick have the gear knob. When I started drive the Sportage, it only took me a day to get used to the knob, so when I started driving the Maverick, there was no learning curve. Most newer vehicles are going that way. It saves space in the center console for other tings, like storage and larger cup/bottle holders. For many years now, there has been no mechanical linkage from the shifter to the transmission, it's all electronic. They have added a artificial mechanical "feel" to the shifter to make it seem like you're actually shifting into drive, but all the shifter is doing is sending an electric signal to the transmission to shift into drive, park, neutral reverse, etc.. So, going to a knob is a natural progression of technology. Soon, all vehicles will have it. It doesn't both me at all. I never need to touch it while driving.

I find it weird (not arguing with you) that you accidently shift it into neutral while driving. I'm 6'3", 265lbs, so a rather big guy, and I fill out the drivers area, but the knob is nowhere near my leg and it sits so low in the center console that my arm is nowhere near it either when resting on the center arm rest. I have to "reach" down to it to access the knob. So I can't see how it could be accidently shifted while driving. But that's just me and how I fit in the drivers seat.

I haven't had the screen freeze on me (yet). Good to know that we can press the power button and forward button together to reset the screen. Thanks "Ford Truck Guy"

Apparently it's a big enough issue that Ford actually has a way to solve it and others know about it.

Not sure about the window yet. I live in Colorado and there are a lot of rocks and stuff on the roads. I've had a lot of rocks come up and hit my other vehicles' windshields, but thankfully haven't had a chipped/cracked window yet. The hot/cold cycles here makes windows crack even faster once they get a small chip in them. Hopefully I won't have that problem.

All in all, I'm very happy with the maverick so far.
hi! Thanks for taking time to read. I demonstrate how the gear shift happens to me in the video. It’s hard to believe that I’d be the only one unique enough to have this happen to but you never know! Lol, I’ve had the Mav since June and I’d say it’s happen to me three times. It’s only recently that I finally understood how it was happening. I thought it was some weird Electrical glitch at first. Then finally I saw the error in my ways.

I finished chemo 6 months ago, so I still had lingering bone pain and would need to stretch my legs in the truck quite often while driving long distances. Maybe this is why I’d encounter this over others.

Since you HATE (a very strong emotion) just sell it to someone who will love it.

Rock hitting glass always has the rock winning.

Just update the radio/interface software like everyone else has done so for the last 4 or more months which fixed the issue.

Are you stretching your leg over the center console. If yes stop doing that.

I got used to the change to the shifter knob from a lever in about a month and actually love having it. No amount of stretching has ever hit the knob.

Your thread title and rant seem to say the opposite.
I don’t hate the truck at all! Yet, there are a few things that bug me and some things I do hate! However the use of the word bug would never illicit such a passionate response from proud Maverick owners like yourself!

thank you for reading, I assume you didn’t watch the video! Also thank your for taking time to respond! I was actually clueless about the rest until everyone posted, apparently I was the only dummy that didn’t know this fix 😅

- Bed trim makes it difficult to get a water tight seal up against the cab with a hard cover. My tools are already rusty, but still.
- AM/FM interface is crappy and cumbersome, especially when using maps/messages.
- Cabin temperature numbers are meaningless as outdoor temperatures change.
- Cupholders are difficult to clean
- Lack of traditional engine noises makes it easy to zone out and end up speeding/going too slow
- Big trucks like to rev and roll coal at me

The shift knob is my biggest peeve. Mainly because it takes twice as long to do a 3 point turn as my Ranger did.

Reviews like this make me wonder if people have never owned a car before. Come to my dealership and you will see us replaced several $3000 windshields per week due to rock chips/cracks.
Well, no need to wonder because I’ve owned many vehicles before! Most of them fords, I’ve driven The same route for almost 12years. I’ve had rocks hit my windshield before that left small chips. Only once in the last 12 years have I had a small rock hit my windshield that others have already been complaining about crack at an early amount of miles. Yeah if you work at a dealership I’d say it’s not a fair comparison as you are literally the place to go to fix windshields.

however, if you are a ford dealership and those windshields are for mavericks then your story definitely helps my case😂.

thanks for watching and taking time to reply!

I have over 45K miles with severe weather changes & coninuous road construction in michigan and I still have the original windshield (1 chip fixed at the bottom of drivers side), windshields are tested/windshields are structural and safety components of all newer vehicles. I know many people complain about thin paint and easily scratched plastics too as are more opinions and observations coming from their previous vehicles, etc... I wasn't a fan of the shifter knob, but I knew it before I bought and grown to like the extra space now. The radio is the only thing I can agree and not understand with the glitches in todays technology area and I just live with:cautious: and with so many positives fullfilling all my needs this is by far my favorite new vehicle I have ever purchased - bt again is only my opinion.
Agreed! All we can give is our opinions these days! I post nothing as fact merely a new Maverick owner that loves his truck but dislikes a few things 😂

anyways thanks for taking time to reply.

My favorite vehicle is always the one l am currently driving . no real complaints yet . not looking forward to taking Mav in for recall . currently enjoying the Mav for its utility .
ditto! The utility has been HUGE for me. Having the bed while also have the mpg for the interstate driving has been clutch. Not to mention the value of the price when ordering.

As a former Ranger owner I can identify with this. I’m pretty much used to the rotary shift knob, but I wish FMC would have put a hard stop on the drive setting “D”, instead of letting it free wheel and continue turning. I’ve dorked out a number of times and done this, and then moved forward instead reverse as I was expecting. Most of the time it hasn’t been an issue, but once I damn near hit another car in a tight space.

The only other complaint I have is the drive mode setting. I know it’s been brought up as nauseum on this board but I can’t imagine it would that hard to program to leave the truck in its last setting without having to manually set it every time I turn on the engine. 90-95% of time I drive in Eco mode…..

As for the windshield issue, it’s a sad fact of life that it happens. I got hit by a rock two months after getting my truck but miraculously it didn’t cause a crack. Our Passat windshield got hit by a rock six months after buying it, and it caused a crack….. lower part of the passenger side; I was willing to let it go but the wife drives the car and insisted on getting it replaced lol.

I wonder how much angle of deflection has to do with the likely hood of a chip/crack in vehicle windshields? Like the closer to 90degrees versus closer to 30 degrees.

It probably has a lot to do with it along with curvature. Some car designs are just more prone to getting chips, the Maverick is not the only one.

The turning radius on my Ranger was so good I never had to do a 3 pt turn! Nothing beats pulling a U between curbs with room to spare.

Inflammatory titles are how people try to get you to read their threads and view their YouTube videos. Often they have nothing to do with the actual content or are the opposite of the content.
