My dealer usually has a $1K doc fee. As others have mentioned I used Xplan and it was $100 instead.

Mustang Club of America was the best $35 I ever spent.

My dealer has no doc fee. Tax and title and that's it.

DOC fees ( documentation fees ) used to be low and were there to cover the cost of sending someone to the Department of Motor Vehicles in each state to file the paperwork ( title, registration, etc. ) required after the sale. $50 was reasonable to most....
BUT, dealers found it to be a way to increase profit in a very slimy way. There are states that limit the amount they can charge.
ALWAYS remember Doc fees are simply additional dealer profit. Nothing else but that.
Same with some of the "Prep fees". So understand that going into the negotiation. Mavericks are hard to get and get marked up over MSRP often. So they are going to be harder to negotiate these fees. I bought a new RV a couple days ago. $850 PDI fee. No problem I told the manager. Just stick it where you want, my offer is this amount all in. They will say they must charge the fee. Allow them, but make them take that amount OFF the vehicle!

Illinois is a $325 “documentation fee”. This is supposed to be the be the max amount able to be charged, but dealers have been notorious of inflating that number in the Chicagoland area. X-Plan $100 pricing does not apply to Illinois (to my knowledge) due some sort of regulation or laws on it.

We paid the dealer $449 in “processing and document fees” here in Pennsylvania for our MY23 truck.

That was up from $422 quoted us when we put in our MY22 truck (never built).

But we did get a $87 check back from the dealer two weeks after we picked up the truck. Accompanying letter said it was a refund of an “online registration fee” we’d paid, because they were able to do a “manual registration.” (? Made no sense to us … but we cashed the check and didn’t ask questions…)

$150 Not bad considering oil & filter, tire rotations, state inspections free for life. One year free dent and ding repair and lifetime engine guarantee.

I can't understand WHY you people are paying these doc fees?? It cost the dealership 10 minutes of whatever the hourly pay of the employee who does this online....maybe $5 in actual wages. Just say no! I paid $0 in doc fees. $0

Their argument is this - they do have to maintain all the sale records for a certain length of time which is true. In Tennessee it is three years. The cost of that - certainly not as much as they are charging.

My doc fee was $344.00, which is slightly below average for the area (central MA). I've also never found that fee to be negotiable, even at dealerships that are considered ethical and reputable.

I even walked out of Herb Chambers Ford over it and they made no attempt to negotiate to keep the sale.
