What “Document Fee” has everyone seen?

Curios to see what everyone is paying for the “Document Fee” here in NJ my dealer was charging $499 with absolutely no negotiation on it.

In Connecticut my dealership originally charged $599 and recently upped it to $799.

Doc fees are always a rip-off and they vary all over the country....that's why I found a dealer who would accept Ford X-Plan...Doc fees CANNOT be more than $100 with X-Plan. You just have to get the dealer to agree to sell under X-Plan, as they do't have to do so. I'm hoping my truck arrives next week and that the dealer will continue to honor our agreement.

Some states regulate these fees. Three years ago somebody on reddit indicated NJ does not impost a limit on them. Even if that's still the case, the state may require that all customers be charged the same amount for a document fee as every other customer and that amount might have to be registered with the state (usually a consumer protection office or something similar). So they might be technically correct on their inability to negotiate. I don't know if that's the case in NJ but where it is, you'd have to get the $499 reduced from some other part of the transaction. FWIW ~$500 was the going rate at most dealers in my area.
