Is this part safe to remove or is there an aftermarket replacement or does it not matter?

Definitely didn't want to be dragged into this 'debate' - ha! Here's my reality...I have no idea, I'm not an engineer. I've always pulled the air boxes, inlet tubes, and air silencers out of my cars and put in an open-air element because a) it cleans up the engine bay and b) 'less is more.' Does it hurt performance? Is it good/bad/other? No idea...Good luck!
Sorry AMCfoxbody! my bad. just giving the op some visual options maybe get some advise. I doubt it would help much (gain HP)changing from stock without doing some other engine mods.

No worries at all! It's a healthy discussion and what this forum is all about!

I'm in the 'leave it alone' camp, but that's not what OP wants to hear.
I am OK with it. I don't know. I am open to all opinions. Just not the insulting or dismissive ones.

I will leave it alone. It gets colder air and even some ram air affect being in the factory location.

If you were off roading it a lot it may get more dirt in it, in the stock location, but a K&N is not the answer to dirt in the air, they do terrible in dirt and dust. K&N is for the clean air of the street and track not the dirty air of the trail where they get clogged fast and let to much dust by, at least from my personal experience with motorcycles.

I am guessing you want more on road performance witch would be to get the best hi flow drop in air filter and to change it regularly.

I would say to do the intercooler upgrade that others have suggested.

This part of the intake is very narrow. IT seems like it would be a restriction to airflow. It is possible to remove it and just leave to hole into the airbox. Or is there an aftermarket replacement that is a wider pipe? Or is it not worth it for a stock engine.

I know there will be 100 different opinions and thoughts on this. I don't want to get made fun of or demeaned. I have heard that fresh air outside is possibly better than engine bay air, but with an open airbox it might get much more air with this piece missing. The best option seems to be an aftermarket piece that allows for much more air, but I couldn't find if there is one.

There seems to be a shortage of filters in my area. Nobody has them. My dealer is stocking aftermarket cabin air filters. All the local parts stores could not even order me a filter. K&N what the only thing available. I found a green filter and installed it. Their claim is they are a middle ground between airflow and K&N letting everything in. They claim to filter to 5 microns. I hope it is true, but with the extra airflow they say they allow this funnel seems to be a choke point.

Maybe I am just bore today and over thinking it, maybe I can get an extra 3-5 HP. I don't know and am asking for honest, non-insulting advice or help.
Warranty, warranty, warranty. That's all I can say about this.

Totally agree. Oil soaked air filters past to much dirt. I have used them and taken them off. I would advise individual's not to install them especially on a direct injection engine such as the 2.0L Turbo. The function of the plenum in this engine is just to deliver air with out a fuel charge. Port injection delivers fuel and air that cleans the valves. Valve problems will arise early in the engines life if you don't have an efficient air filtration system in a direct injection engine.

I actually tried this at the dragstrip back to back runs, by removing that piece it was .05 quicker & .40 mph more, it wasn't much, but it did pull a little harder. Air temp at the time was 68*. I'd leave it on, especially in warm weather, you wouldn't notice the difference on the street. By the old hot rod calculator, it's worth about 5hp.
