In the past week, it has gotten very cold in Chicago. Noticed my hybrid went down in mpg- over 1 less. Is this normal in the cold. Why?

I’m in San Antonio Texas, so the temperature doesn’t get as cold. We’re in the 40’s now… freezing… lol. I’ve turned on my heater twice so far, so it could be the heater uses the engine coolant water to heat up the cabin. Thus, the engine needs to start running as soon as I turn the heater on. Maybe using more fuel?!?In the past week, it has gotten very cold in Chicago. Noticed my hybrid went down in mpg- over 1 less. Is this normal in the cold. Why?
Hey, I'm in Michigan, too and have noticed a big hit because of the cold. Still getting good MPG, but I'm wondering what mode you tend to use most? After reading another post about the slippery mode, I have begun to experiment with it. My commute is mostly two-lane 45 to 55 MPH roads.Great Milage Gunny. I try to drive like you, no lead footing. The Temps are getting cold here in Michigan, but I was able to get another 500 miles plus on one tank of gas.

I ran an errand on my lunch today. On the way to there I was in ECO mode. I drove 8.2 miles total 4.1 on Electric for 41mpg. On the way back, I left it in standard mode, drove 8.3 miles total, 4.9 on Electric for 51.4mpg. Only thing I could think of for the difference was the car was warmer on the drive home. Just makes me happy to get good mileage.Hey, I'm in Michigan, too and have noticed a big hit because of the cold. Still getting good MPG, but I'm wondering what mode you tend to use most?
