I'm wanting to add several LED strips under the dashboard to provide additional ambient lighting in the front footwells. I'd like to tap into the existing ambient light bulb power source in the center console in order that the LEDs would be controlled in conjunction with the OEM light. Does anyone have experienced dismantling the console to gain access to the ambient light and able to identify the power wire I need to tap into?

I have mine tapped into a fuse controlled by ignition, but if someone figures out which fuse controls the courtesy door lights, that would be awesome.

Here's a thought. Would tapping into fuse #22 work? It controls the instrument cluster, which I believe will turn on as soon as you open the door.

I have taken the center floor console out, but for a different reason.
I figured it out from this thread: https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/forum/threads/default-to-eco-mode-with-this-diy-module.17805/

Is fairly easy:
Pop off panel on passenger side (lower front at footwell).
Remove bolt in equivalent panel on driver’s side, then it pops off.
2 bolts at front, under climate controls.
2 bolts on each side.
Then disconnect main harness (very carefully).
Then slide back entire console, to clear climate controls, then lift up.

Thanks to all for your replies. I’m going to look into two options. First, will be getting to the present ambient light in the center console and tying into the wire providing power. The thought is that the additional LEDs will be controlled in a manner that allows me to turn all the lights on or off and adjust their brightness. my other option is to go into the overhead console and tie into the existing courtesy light switch. More to follow.

Sorry for the delay, I just saw your post. I was in that area previously to install a Kicker Remote Bass Knob for the HS-10 Hideaway. The panel snaps down an inch or so and straight back towards the rear of the truck.
Here is the thread that shows the internals of that area: https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/f...e-bass-level-knob-mounting.14878/#post-289397

Please follow-up with your project, it will be good to see the results!

Doesn't the Lariat have footwell lighting stock?

Red Ryder - Thanks. Followed your guidance and easily gained access to the ambient light module. For others - the usb, 12v connector panel is held in place with four stamped metal catches. Working from the rear of the panel (toward the truck bed) I used a plastic pry downward to free the two rear catches from the front console unit. Then it’s just a question of gently pulling the panel to the rear to disengage the front clips. I haven’t unwrapped the wire bundle connecting the ambient light module, but it appears to have three wires going into the module. Anyone know which I tap into for power and ground?

Yellow w/green stripe has typically been constant 12v.
Black w/blue stripe has typically been ground.
Purple w/white stripe is a 12v that is On based on something else (e.g. accessory); sometimes a varying voltage (e.g. dome light power).

That is a disgusting price for LEDS. Maybe if they tied into a pre-existing OEM color changing system like some vehicles have, but no way that is worth that kinda coin.

I guess to each their own, I can't imagine buying that, margins must be insane.

about a 1/3 of the price, same amount of strips, only thing it is missing is a fuse tap:

On to the next step - The gray ambient light connector slides out to the right from the black holder. The gray connector has a release catch and can be separated from the wiring harness. The light unit has a catch that when released allows the light to be dropped through the panel. Pulling the tape off the three wire bundle revealed a blue striped black wire, a blue striped yellow wire, and a green wire with a red stripe.

My interest in pulling this apart was to connect a set of LEDs to the ambient light circuit so that on and off control and brightness for the OEM ambient light and the footwell LEDs are one. Before splicing into what is there,, what does everyone think, LED black to the black/blue (or a separate ground), LED red to the green/red. Will that likely accomplish what I’m aiming for?

I would take a test light and see, on my bronco and other fords I owned the black and blue was Dome light and the yellow and blue was keyless entry light. but I would take a multimeter and check the wires ! I will also follow since it looks like a cool mod to do to my XL when it comes someday
